2010 Malibu key fob won't work - why?

My 2010 Chevy Malibu key fobs stopped working about 3 months ago -- at first, the lock stopped, then the unlock quit -- therefore, the auto start will not work either. The dealer wants to charge us for new fobs! This seems unreasonable to me since we have TWO Ford products and their fobs continue to work though one is a 1996 and the other a 2000 -- Any ideas?

Open it up, I bet you find what I like to call "Green Cheese" on the electrical circuit. Yes, you need new fobs. Best place to buy them? Ebay. Then take them in to be programmed.

The contacts on the buttons aren't making contact with the circuit board… Common problem on GM fobs.

You can say it's unreasonable all you want but unfortunately if you want them to work you have to buy new ones unless someone fixes them(unlikely).

We're sorry that you're experiencing this issue with your key fobs. If there's anything we can do to assist with this situation, or if you'd like for us to reach out to your dealership to further discuss your concerns, please let us know.

I had a key fob for a late model Toyota stop working. The second one still worked, and the vehicle was still under warranty when I took it in. The asked me if I keep my keys near a cel phone. I would actually put my phone/keys in a drawer and sometimes the key fob would actually be in physical contact. The service person told me that phones can erase key fob. They only needed to reprogram it.

If both of your key fobs had been in close contact with a smart phone, this could be your problem. If you do need to replace the fobs, I'd avoid buying them from your dealer since they will likely be expensive. You can buy an aftermarket replacement (just look around on the internet). Also, ask the dealer what the part number is. Then input this into the website I've given below. Often times, they will have a better price (though not always). You should be able to program it yourself. Check out the link (or look at youtube for instructions as well). You probably want to try the reprogram method first before trying to replace them.
