There's sensor on top of the rear axle. Slowly remove it to prevent metal shaving from dropping back into the differential housing. Over time, metal shavings build up on that sensor because it is magnetic. Too much build up interferes with the pulse signal that commands the transmission to shift. While it's out use a magnetic pick-up tool and run it around inside the hole to get more metal shavings. You can clean the old sensor, BUT it is better to buy a new one since magnets weaken over time. After changing the sensor it is best to have the rear axle fluid drained and replaced as the old fluid will have shavings that will make their way back onto that sensor. Had this happen on my my old 2003 Ranger Edge, too. When I bought the new sensor the erratic shifting stopped.
If this doesn't solve your problem then the transmission needs flushed and a new filter installed.
- I have a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0L 2 Wheel Drive which I suspect the Proportional Valve maybe malfunctioning? When applying my brakes while slowing down from freeway speeds, I feel a pulsating sensation which seem to come from the rear drum brakes. Once my speed go below 40 MPH, the pulsation disappears. I don't have this problem when stopping from below 40 MPH. The rear brakes don't lock up when I apply brakes at any speed. But it could be that the pulsation while breaking down from high speed is normal.
- Ford Ranger 4.0, 172,000 miles rough idle when starting after sitting overnight or after 2-3 hours. Starts 1st crank, idles rough 1 minute? Or so and then smooths out and runs fine. New heads and gaskets. Cleaned MAF sensor, throttle body and air intake sensor, new IAC valve, new air and fuel filters, new PCV valve. No smoke coming from exhaust and No check engine light. Any ideas what's causing this rough idle?
- Can I fit 31 inch tires on a stock 1998 ford ranger XLT 2wd? I have a stock 1998 ford ranger XLT 2wd at stock hight and currently have have the tire size 225/70R14. I wanted to put 31x10.50R15LT on it. (31 inch tires). Would I have to lift my truck to put that on there or can I ride 31s stock.
- Can I be pulled over for a fast blinking turn signal? Both my left and right turn signals blink fast, but when I put my hazards on, they work normal. I got out, and all four LED's work, but blink SUPER fast. I have a 1999 Ford Ranger, and am not sure what's going on.
