Would the American Civil War have been avoided if Lincoln lost the election in 1860 or change his mind on slavery being abolished?

Also if I went back in time to day Lincoln was assassinated and try convince him not to go to the ford theatre would he believe.

A competent diplomat would have been able to resolve a states rights issue without killing 250,000 Americans and maiming as many more.

No because Lincoln didn't really want to abolish slavery anyway. He wanted to keep the United States together more than worry about slaves. He said himself he is not the friend of blacks.

No
The Civil War was about White Supremacy ;not slavery

No because the civil war happened while slavery was still a thing in the North. It wasn't abolished until after the war.

Lincoln was not an abolitionist and did not, in 1860, advocate the elimination of slavery by federal law or force where it currently existed. He opposed the extension of slavery into the territories.

Southern states wanted to secede - easiest way to avoid the civil war would have been for lincoln to let them

The north abolishes slavery - the south don't - both sides happy - problem solved

(just think if he had done just that
The north would have had the confederates states to the south, not mexico
No illegal immigrants into the north (the Confederacy would have either taken them into slavery or just shot them)
No drug traffic from mexico into the north

Lincoln didn't go to war against slavery. He said so many times.

He changed his mind on secession. Lincoln decided when he became big cheese that no one cud leave his country. Before that he agreed with the authors of constitution that any state cud secede from the union any time.

Changed his mind at what point?
