Trouble replacing alternator on old classic car, external voltage regulator?

I started replacing the alternator on my 68 ford galaxie xl, but when I was pulling the old on off, the metal connector of one of the wires from the external voltage regulator was so rusted it just snapped clean off. Will I be able to replace just that one wire? The previous owner bundled all the wires together with electrical tape and I haven't cut it apart yet to investigate where the wire goes.
I really don't want to have to hire someone to rewire the whole car. Basically I'm just feeling a bit in over my head and would really appreciate some advice on how to move forward.

Joser is right, it is an easy fix. You can do it. Go to an auto parts store with the old rusted connector and tell them you want to learn how to replace it. Go when they are not busy. Someone should tell how to strip the wire and get you the right end to replace it.

You don't change the wire you put a new end on it… Solder or crimp style… Take it to a shop they'll charge you minimum fee they have for electrical.

Here are directions on how to do it. http://www.ehow.com/...ector.html

  • Will the old style 10SI delco alternator charge in both directions of rotation? I built this alternator in 1985 and adapted it to my 1950 Ford tractor when I converted the tractor from 6 to 12 volts. It just failed recently. Originally, 29 years ago, I seem to recall having a problem with the rotation as far as charging is concerned. Whatever problem I had, if any, was fixed b/c it has been charging since then. Looking at the drive pulley, it rotates clockwise. Is this an issue I will have to deal with? Or will it charge in both directions?
  • Why don't car companies remake some of their classic car models if people like them so much? Of course safety is in mind because everyone would freak out if they didn't have a seat belt and air bags in every inch of the car, but why can't some of the companies just remake their best selling car models? Dodge could remake their 1948 Sedan and Ford could remake their 1949 Custom. I could list more but I can't think of any more classics.
  • I'm having trouble finding an upgraded alternator for my 2006 Ford taurus? I have a 2006 Ford Taurus with a banging audio system. The system pulls over 2500 watts rms. I quickly ran into a problem of my alternator not running at a high enough amperage. Where can I find an upgraded alternator that s fits this car?
