Which used car should I pick?

I'm a single mom of two kids. I need a car as soon as possible. I can only afford $2,800. I'm considering two cars from dealerships:

- 2002 Buick Century Custom, $2500, 165k
- 1999 Ford Taurus, $2200, 202k

I know I would have more options if I save more, but I need a car now.

Added (1). Condition is good on both cars. The only Toyota in my price range has 300k on it. I can't find an affordable Honda with four doors.

Added (2). Another option is a 2004 Chevrolet Aveo for $2500. It has 160k on it. It's also in good condition, but I heard that Aveo's aren't that great.

Both are more or less disposable domestic cars.

Go with the buick, it is newer and lower miles.

It depends on the condition of each car. For cars in this price range, the potential for serious problems is high. Therefore, you should pick one of the cars and have it inspected by a professional mechanic before you buy. Spending $75-100 for an inspection can save you thousands of dollars in repairs and a ton of headaches.

Never take the word of a dealer or seller that a used car "runs great" or "has no problems." Since used cars are sold "as-is" it'll be too late to do anything if you discover problems after the purchase.
