Are old trucks still good for long distance trips?

I need something inexpensive to tow my car(5000lb trailer) across a few states and back, once or maybe twice, every year.

I found a 2001 Ford Ranger Edge 3.0 V6, and a 2002 F150 5.4 V8, both low 100k miles.

Would these, or smilar trucks(15 year old with roughly 100k miles) still be good enough where they won't leave me stranded in the middle of nowhere?

The thing is, I just want a truck where I can replace all of the wear items, do maintenance, and drive. Though I'm not sure if something this old is going to be that way, hence I may scratch the whole idea and just sell my old boxster to buy something newer like a corolla. I do understand that maintenance is key, and I'm usually on top of that. But as far as age, I just don't want to end up doing maintenance non stop.

THAT RANGER WAS A GREAT LITTLE TRUCK. MOST FOLKS HO HAD ONE WISH THEY HAD THEIRS BACK.

The RANGER was a mid-size pickup. I believe the MAXIMUM towing capacity IF equipped with the factory towing package, was 3500 pounds. It is NOT heavy enough to tow a 5000 lb trailer.

I don't think a Ranger is a large enough truck to tow your trailer and car across town let alone across state lines. The F150 would be if you have a goose neck trailer, not bumper pull.

  • Is it safe to drive a ford ranger on the freeway for long trips? Can a ford ranger safely sustain speeds of 85-90 mph without any problems at all? I'm looking for a pickup truck that can haul stuff and is good for driving off roaming occasionally but I also what a pickup that has good performance as well. My question is can a 2007 ford ranger XLT 4.0 v6 5 speed manual sustain speeds of 85-90 mph or is that pushing the limits of this truck?
  • Can I drive an older car long distance? I'm planning on buying an older car, either a 1984 Monte Carlo, 1999 Cadillac Eldorado, or a 2000 Ford Ranger and drive either one to Fort Polk from Miami since I'm PCSing there in a month. I was wondering is it a good idea to drive an older vehicle that far even if it is well maintained? Also how hard would it be to find parts and fix a classic car like the Monte Carlo?
