Add some Marvel Mystery Oil. It won't take much. It is very good for freeing up sticking lifters. Give it 50-100 miles to work.
I have a 4.7 Magnum that has had a sticky lifter for about 80,000 miles.
The lifter is not sticking or sticky. The little ball (check valve) is worn and not sealing/seating.
Maybe a Hupmobile had a stuck lifter.
It may not be a lifter!
It could be a loose spark plug wire (unlikely if it goes away)
or
An exhaust leak.
Both can sound like a stuck lifter.
Depending on which engine you have- it might not have lifters. The 2.3 has "cam followers".
If it is a lifter, the problem is just that it is bleeding down and needs to pump up. Hardly worth the effort to find the bad lifter/s to replace it.
- Transmission fluid change or flush or both (1997 Ford Taurus GL)? I just got a 1997 Ford Taurus GL with over 133000 miles. The car is in pretty good shape but when I shift gears it shifts kind of hard. I have no idea if the trans has ever been serviced but my guess is that it need to be. Would you recommend just draining the pan, changing the filter and gasket and replenishing the fluid or should I do a flush? Not a power flush. Just using an extension hose to drain the old fluid and add new fluid. Or do you recommend both? If so, in what order?
- 1999 Ford Taurus oil change? I've never changed my oil myself but since jiffy lube messed my car up before I decided to try it myself. I was wondering after you drain the oil and go to remove the filter do I need to have anything covering my starter or if the last of the oil will miss it when I remove it? I know oil has messed up my starter before but that s when there was plenty of oil in there.
- Ford Ranger 4.0, 172,000 miles rough idle when starting after sitting overnight or after 2-3 hours. Starts 1st crank, idles rough 1 minute? Or so and then smooths out and runs fine. New heads and gaskets. Cleaned MAF sensor, throttle body and air intake sensor, new IAC valve, new air and fuel filters, new PCV valve. No smoke coming from exhaust and No check engine light. Any ideas what's causing this rough idle?
- After driving Ford Ranger, high mileage, 10 miles and at normal operating temp, I park overnight on level concrete floor. I check oil level? Next day before starting and when I pull dipstick out, oil level is at full mark. I wipe the dipstick clean and re-insert and check oil level again, the oil level is down about 1/8th inch or so. I check it once more and get same reading. Is the crankcase full or do I need to add some oil? Just to be clear, since this is an older Ranger with over 170,000 miles, I use high mileage oil and I check the oil level regularly. It doesn't use oil after just 10 miles of driving.
