Should I buy a car with a replaced engine?

It's my friend's car. He's moving to Japan, so he wants to sell it. It's a 1997 Ford Mustang. It had 248,000 miles. Does replacing the engine reset the miles?

He replaced it because it was out of water and a valve broke. He said he'll sell it to me for $1,500.

Replacing the engine only resets the miles on the engine. Everything else has over 240k miles on it, like the transmission, shocks, electronics, drive train… If the transmission is an automatic (and original), then then 240k+ miles should be a big concern.

If the engine is a 6 or 8 cylinder, then you have to consider the cost of gas. The EPA (miles per gallon) on a mustang (V6 = 18/27; V8 + 15/24). And that is for a brand new Mustang.

Also, see what that model/year goes for on craigslist.

There's no reason not to buy it IF-----the price is right-----you have the rest of the car checked out by a mechanic for things like transmission operation, suspension, brakes, electrical system working properly etc. At 248K miles a lot of these things might have been already fixed also.

The car still has 248k. And for all you know the replaced engine was used and had 300,000 miles on it.

If its not under warranty, it doesn't increase or decrease the value of the car. (Assuming the same engine was put in)

No, because usually it means the car was worn out and in a bad condition.

  • Should I buy a Ford Focus Zx3 or should I look for a different car? I'm a male going to college as a sophmore next semester (this car will be my first car). Should I buy a stick or an automatic (I don't know how to drive a stick at the moment, but I'm willing to learn)? What do you think would be more fun? Do you think a ford focus Zx3 is a good car for me or do you have any other car suggestions?
  • I want to buy a car but make a measly amount of money (how can I buy one)? I have a 2001 Ford Focus with a little over 170,000 miles on it. It's not really running that well. I will try to keep it up with oil changes, tune ups, etc. But if I sell it, how much trade in value will it have? How much will I need to get a cheap car? I only make under 400 dollars every two weeks because I have a part time job so I barely have any money.
  • I don't know if i need my starter replaced.Should I? I have a 2003 Ford Focus and it wasn't working properly because my key wouldn't turn the ignition I've never had that problem before so i got somebody to fix it and it works but i always have to hit the key to get the key to turn so it can start, all he did was repair it, but should i get it replaced so i don't have to have this problem again?
  • I want to buy a new car under 13000,to last at least 10 years. What should i buy? I was thinking at an ford fiesta. What do you think? Other suggestions? I don't want to buy one that costs much to repair… 13000 euros
