My car is slow to accelerate. Is there anything I can do to improve it?

I have a 2014 Ford Fusion with about 60,000 miles on it. I'm not positive but I believe it has a 2.0L engine.

My car is slow to accelerate. It's annoying to drive. At green lights, minivans pass me up so I get stuck behind them going 55mph… (I frequently drive down a one-lane highway).

It is also slow going up steep hills on the highway.

I've been renting a Dodge Charger for the week and feel a lot more free on the roads. I wish my current car could accelerate like this… It obviously has a better engine.

Added (1). The vehicle health report shows everything is fine

Take it in for a computer diagnosis - there's something wrong. I've rented them and they're peppy. Previously, a V6 was optional but no longer available - even the Lincoln version has the 2.0 engine.

added: Yes - as some others said - just start throwing new parts at it willy-nilly… Eventually it will be OK, even if you have to replace every part.

If it's a Turbo - maybe that's not working.

Replace spark plugs

Your Fusion has the 2.0 Turbocharged I4 which develops 231 H.P. And 270 lb/ft of torque. It should not be slow by any means. Have you replace the air filter? If not replace it. Other than that there's no reason for it to be slow. Is your check engine light on? My advice is to seek professional help from a trusted mechanic to diagnose the problem. Something is wrong for sure.

The Fusion is not a hotrod and never will be unless you rebuild it with a 5.0 v8

If the car is still under warranty, go to the dealer again and let them drive it WITH you. Then tell them to drive the Charger. Something is wrong with your car. If the warranty is over, go a mechanic with a (expensive) scanner to check the O2 sensors. They could be "lazy". Clean the MAF sensor with a sensor cleaner.

Could I just give a list of suggestions?
1. And probably the cheapest>Put some fuel additive like Lucas Fuel System Deep Clean. Your fuel system is probably dirty. Use 2 bottles on 2 different times you fill your gas tank. When putting this into the gas tank, let your gas get down to about 1/4 a tank (and no less than that, never let your fuel go below 1/4 a tank, it could harm the fuel pump). Then right before filling up, add 1 bottle of Lucas. Then repeat on the next fillup. What this does is clean the fuel injectors, combustion chamber, and intake system. Carbon tends to build up in these areas.

2. Change the air filter, that helps acceleration a lot.

3. Change the spark plugs, spark plug wires, and distributor cap if there's one.

"The vehicle health report shows everything is fine"
does it have any way of knowing how dirty your combustion chamber is though?

First get you car properly serviced and get the emissions system checked.
No quick lube joint. A dealer or a specialist.

Then sell the 4 cylinder slow vehicle and buy a 6 or 8 cylinder vehicle and pay for the extra gasoline it uses.

Just keep on top of the typical maintenance. Air filter every five years, oil change three times a year, brake inspection, bleed brakes every two years, new coolant every five years, new tranny fluid every two years, and so on.

  • How to improve a 1999 Ford Taurus SE sedan 3.0L V6? So I bought my grandparents car off them and it runs well and I'm not going for a full blown rally car I just want a sleeper that I can take to the track every now and again and be able to out perform a few unknowing friends, so how can I squeeze a little more hp out of it? (I don't care about suspension cause this is just a sleeper)
