Should I change the timing belt on my ford focus? - 1

I'm getting ready to move to Oregon next week. Today, I'm bringing my car in for maintenance (changing tires, oil, etc.). My car is a 2004 Ford Focus SE (2.0L, DOHC, Zetec).

It has 95,000 miles on it and will have around 98,000 by the time the trip is over. The manual for the car says to change the timing belt every 120,000. Do you think it would be very smart to change it now or wait an extra 20,000 miles to do so?

P.S. The mechanic that we have talked to says the timing belt and water pump change is $650.00. Is this a bad price?

If the scope was working properly upon the first use, I suspect you have gotten some substance smeared on the higher power lenses such as the 40X or 100X objective lenses. Did your scope come with lens paper and cleaner. If not you should go to an optical store to buy lens cleaning solution and lens papers.

Make sure you always use a cover slip on slides that you prepare. If the cover glass or cover slip are omitted, it is easy to accidentally smear the higher power lenses. I'd just drive it. A) It is irrelevant and we don't care where you are moving from or to.

B) The timing belt should be fine if you don't abuse your car with maximum acceleration all the time. I think that price is way too high. Find a shop that does it for half that and do it before the trip. Should be okay but check with a dealer's service dept. Two different places if you feel unsure. From my experience wait until the change interval to change. I changed mine at 110k and they said it looked fine (but was having another issue so while it was in the shop just did it). I also did the water pump too. And my price was well over $1000 about 3 years ago at a ford dealer.

The downside to doing it now - mechanics notoriously (sorry guys this has been my experience) leave bolts off (belt cover) and don't change things (like valve cover gaskets even though they have 110k miles and the rubber is all brittle) when doing these types or repairs causing oil leaks etc shortly thereafter (down into the sparkplug wells - well you get my dissatisfaction) - that you will have to fix and may be more of hassle on the trip than is worth.

Good price but is screwing around that much with the car just before going on a long trip more or less worrisome to you - I have little faith in other peoples work so I tend to do most thing myself when time and equipment allow because I'm the one taking all the risks when it leaves the shop.

A last point 20k miles is about 1/6 sooner so if you had to pay 1/6 more would you do that as well - for no reason?
