Do I need to purchase Ford Sync to be able to hook my phone to bluetooth?

I own 2010 Ford Focus. I have had it for over two years. I have never paid a dime in subscription fees to Ford Sync, but this morning when I tried to hook up my Iphone 5c to Bluetooth it said my subscription had expired. I went online and the Ford website is saying I have to pay $60 for a 12 month subscription. Do I have to purchase this to be able to connect to Bluetooth audio? I could care less about navigation and any other features of Ford Sync, but $60 a year for only Bluetooth capabilities seems like a bit of a rip off. Any suggestion?

The hands-free calling and Bluetooth Audio features of SYNC are free for the life of the vehicle.

I recommend soft resetting your iPhone by holding down the sleep/wake and home buttons simultaneously, until the Apple logo appears.

If you're still unable to connect, perform a master reset on the system:
