2000 Ford Focus Slow Acceleration and Pulsating at Stops?

I have already replaced spark plugs and wires and I suspect that it is the Ignition Coil that is the problem.
The check engine light is constantly on and begins to flash on occasion while accelerating.

Could it be anything else other than the ignition coil? I'm a poor college grad and can't afford a new car at this moment or dumping money in "fixes" that don't fix the problem.

I'm a semi-novice so explanations would be great.

It has a 2.0L, 4 cyl engine.

Added (1). The spark plugs and wires were definitely in need of a replacement.

It probably relates to the computer wearing out. This happens to most cars around 120k miles or so. Especially black cars (get much hotter and heat = death for micro processors)
Nearly everything in a car today relies on the computer to tell it how to mix the gas and air, when to spark, etc. It listens to sensors reading exhaust and intake, etc.
Now it could relate to a dirty MAF and/or MAP sensor (both located in the throttle body)
Don't just replace things on assumptions. Test them to see if they actually need to be replaced. You can easily look up methods for testing things.
You need special cleaners (one for each type of sensor) in the throttle body. They will be damaged by improper cleaning.

Needing plugs and wires can cause poor excelleration but the pulsating is a vacuum leak with fire extinguisher handy spray carb cleaner around intake manifold brake booster vacuum line where injectors mount and any vacuum line you see DON'T spray at distributor, distributor wires this is why you should have fire extinguisher handy… This is not a shade tree manuever its the way vacuum leaks are check for in a garage

There are many auto parts stores that will read computer fault codes for free, find out why your check engine
light is on. A flashing check engine light indicates that the problem must be fixed immediately to avoid damage to emission related parts. Get your codes read then go from there, don't waste money on parts you might not need

  • What car is cheap and can be modified to be really fast in speed and acceleration? I have a Ford Taurus and I feel like as if it lacks speed and acceleration. Also which modifications can increase the speed of the car and acceleration of it without removing any weight?
  • Why is my engine shaking during idle at stops and park? I got a ford 1999 taurus SE with 100,000 miles on it. I just changed the spark plugs and wireset out and it got even worse. I was thinking the IAC might of just gone bad but before I go get one I wanted to ask if there was anything else I could test before buying more new stuff for it.
  • Car shakes still? My 94 Ford Taurus shakes on the highway. 65-80 mph and after 80 it stops? I've gotten new tie rods, a realignment, new breaks, and resurfaced rotors, and it still happens to shake even though the mechanic said that the problem was the rotors being warped. Before I spend more money on the damned thing I was wondering if anyone here had some insight to why it's still shaking on the highway. One thing I've noticed is that when I accelerate a chirping sound ensues and chirps faster as I go faster? Any ideas? Please?
  • My Ford Focus is so slow. How can I make it faster? My 2010 Ford Focus ses sedan is slower than a turtle. Is there anything I can do to it to make it fast? Like it can't even keep up to speed with other cars on the freeway going the speed limit. I've seen a 2010 Ford Focus modded and it was racing on a track. So what the heck did they do to their Focus to make it fast? I've heard you can buy a chip. How does a chip work? Also what other ways are there to make it faster?
