Why some new cars still have rear drum brakes?
Like nissan versa, ford fiesta and couple, some cars uses 4 wheel disc brakes makes optional, my car has rear drum and front disc, they stop well to me during heavy braking.
Drum brakes, compared to disc brakes, are simply a less expensive component. Automakers such as Ford and Nissan use them to keep costs down.
They are OK. They saved money that's why.
(the drums stick and grind after they are out in the rain all night.)
60% to 80% of braking is done by front brakes (greater weight in front and weight pitches forward on application of brakes) so small, simple, drum brakes are more than adequate for the back. And… Disc brakes aren't much good as parking/emergency brakes often requiring additional equipment which isn't necessary with rear drum brakes which work well as parking brakes.
Because drum brakes are cheaper.
Why do away with something that obviously works?
Newer does not always mean better.
Small light weight cars like that don't benefit from having rear disc brakes, and, as stated by others, the drum setup is cheaper.
Sure there's a reason for that
Drum brakes are cheaper and do the job fine.
Too much rear braking is a problem as it makes the car unstable. Ask any motor cyclist.
CHEAPER to manufcature and a SURE SIGN of other compromises! EUROPEAN DRUM brakes are EXCELLENT but like All these types they tend to LOCK UP and are sensitive to ROAD WETNESS! They will SELF ADJUST< just fine! But a SURE SIGN of compromise is DRUM BRAKES! If you have them GET A DIFFERENT CAR! ABS systems get CONFUSED and you can be more ACCIDENT PRONE and DEFINTELY have a LOWER value type car! ABS and ANTI SKID from BOSCH save LIVES and car expenses! NEVER buy a NEW car jjust becasue it is CHEAPER! Get a TRIED and TRUE used car that has a GOOD REPUTATION and forget about MIELAGE! I'm an EXPERT with cars generally! I KNOW what they need and when and WHCIH are good companies and BAD companies! Gm was sued OVER and OVER again for teh same MSITAKES and PROBLEMS! Unlike others they CONTINUED to make the SAME MISTAKES ad infinitum! They even made ALUMINUM DRUMS for a while on X cars that All were recalled and changed! REAL CARS froM EUROPE use only the BEST in brakes! Even older VW DRUM BRAKES excelled over domestic ones in OLDS and CHEVY! ATE GIRLING iis the BRAND most european car makers use! They are FURNISHED by BRAKE MAKERS like BREMBO< etc! MOst older GM brakes are UNSAFE JOKE! EURO brakes last for 100k miels to 150 k miels dependign upon HOW you drive and WHERE you dirve! WALK AWAY from ANy new car with DRUM BRAKES! There's NO way to get safe ABS control of them! They fill with water and salt and then are USELESS! BYE NOW!
Drum brakes suck. Replacing disc brakes takes a socket wrench and 2 or 4 bolts.
- Why would people buy older foreign cars instead of brand new American cars? I see it all the time, people driving 7-8 year old Mercedes or BMWs that they paid probably paid around $20,000. They could of easily gone out and bought a brand new Ford or Dodge, but they didn't. They bought a Mercedes with over 100k miles. All worn and torn on the inside. But aslong as they're shining on the outside I guess.
- Why do some companies like Ford have a 5year warranty and others like Hyundai have a 10year warranty? Does the company with the longer warranty trust in their product longer? Or they know that the owner will have to do a ton of repairs and without a back up no one would ever buy them?
- Why are some Ford cars (like the Taurus and Focus) such unreliable cars? I'm looking at cars in the $3000 - $4500 range and I'm noticing a decent amount of Ford Taurus's and Focus's and out of all the cars that I see, these are two cars that just seem so unreliable. I test drove a Focus last year and it sounded like something was wrong with the engine.
- Fortuner will still have rear drums in Thailand? All its competitors, isuzu mux, trailblazer, ford everest, montero sport all have disc brakes on all four wheels. How on earth can toyota compete with that? The second gen Fortuner will still retain its ridiculous drum brakes while its second gen competitors have upgraded to discs…
