Is a subcompact car, such as a Hyundai Accent or Ford Fiesta (or similar) good for long road trips?
I've been widowed for 2 years. I'm a small person and I'm looking to trade in my current midsize car, which I shared with my late husband. He was a bit large so he would never fit in a subcompact car. I do not have any children, and nobody else lives with me. I rarely carry passengers. I take long road trips a couple times a year (such as driving up to 6 hours). Will these little cars make it on the interstate highway?
Sure they are - if they are in good shape. I drove from Delaware to Meat Cove in Nova Scotia in a Nissan Versa. It was rented and fairly new. It was a nice vehicle and never struggled on the grades even with me, my wife and a lot of camping equipment.
Modern compact cars are not like the old VW beetles and Ford Pintos of the old days. Modern overhead cam fuel injected four cylinder engines have quite a bit more power than the old iron, carbureted four bangers. The interiors are much nicer too - quieter and with less shaking (if you make sure your tires are well balanced.
Again, just make the car is in tip top shape and don't skimp on the tires. Buy good ones and have them rotated and rebalanced regularly. It makes a big difference.
BTW, Meat cove is a real town - I didn't make it up. It is at the northern tip of Nova Scotia on Cape Breton Island.
The car will last longer than you. When you feel tired, stop and rest. So long as the car is well maintained it will make long trips.
I would recommend the accent except for one thing - because it's low to the ground & has little insulation, the noise from driving on the road, and especially a freeway, is somewhat loud… I suggest you go to several dealers and test drive the accent, and a toyota corolla
They are not for inexperienced drivers. They do no hold up in a wreck. Remember also Most cars and SUVs get ok MPG on the road. Lincoln Towncars get around 25 on the highway.
BUY A TOYOTA CAMRY
- Is it safe to drive a ford ranger on the freeway for long trips? Can a ford ranger safely sustain speeds of 85-90 mph without any problems at all? I'm looking for a pickup truck that can haul stuff and is good for driving off roaming occasionally but I also what a pickup that has good performance as well. My question is can a 2007 ford ranger XLT 4.0 v6 5 speed manual sustain speeds of 85-90 mph or is that pushing the limits of this truck?
- Is it a good idea to take my new car on a road trip? I've had it about a month and have about 1100 miles on it so far (it had 3 when I bought it). It's a 2014 Ford Focus. My job is requiring a few of us to travel out of town tomorrow and I planned on riding along with a coworker but their car flaked out so now I'm forced to drive or take a bus. What do you think? It's about a 230 miles round trip
- What do you think of buying a new Hyundai accent, kia rio, or ford fiesta as a second car? My current car is old and falling apart it has rust everywhere and rocker panels are rotted out. So i was thinking about get a new cheap car like a Hyundai accent or KIA Rio or ford fiesta. What do you think? I don't want a big car just something basic to get me around.
- What car is better over all? 2015 Hyundai Accent 4dr or 2015 Ford Fiesta 4dr? I can't make up my mind… The Hyundai is cheaper and has more horse power but it is smaller then the Ford. The ford has a touch screen gps and the Hyandai does not. So I can't make up my mind. Please give me your opinion http://www.cars.com/go/compare/modelCompare.jsp?myids=16263,15618
