Does taking the muffler off of a 97 Ford explorer 4.0 v6 reduce gas mileage?

Does taking the muffler off of a 97 Ford explorer 4.0 v6 reduce gas mileage? - 1

Possibly, but the main issues are with the noise & it may cause the check engine light to be lit… Leave the vehicle alone… It's not a race car

Hi no it increases the fuel used significantly,.

If you reduce the back pressure too much it's possible that can happen.

Seeing how the muffler is downstream from the cats, and downstream from any 02 sensors; removing the muffler *will not*

1. Cause any check engine light to come on.

2. Increase fuel usage in and of itself.

In most cases YES. This is due to it being part of a tuned system where back pressure is needed for good engine 'scavenging ' in cylinders to get best power. This is where exhaust gases flow out and assist drawing in new air charge. Engine will be set up for this amount of 'back pressure' and fuelling and spark advance set accordingly ( mapped)
removal normally has effect of heavily reducing back pressure an d thus full being injected doe snot have full at charge for efficient combustion so we get less power. Less power means we often push accelerator harder to compensate and get acceleration ( as will be much less) hence fuel consumption rises and can be significant! We will also get fault lights on dash as sensors 'see' an issue or other don't as not fitted to missing exhaust!

  • I have a 1999 Ford Mustang GT and its sluggish when taking off? What could be the issue? Its sluggish on power usually only happens in the first 3 gears between 1800 and 2000 rpms. And also when I give it gas at idle it stays at 2000 rpm before idling down. 178k miles. Just changed a faulty o2 sensor. So what else could possibly making it do this. Probably plugs and coil on plugs need to be changed? If any advice it would greatly help thanks
  • Entire car loses power when we floor the gas. Gauges reset until we let off gas. (still drives) 02 ford mustang. The car loses power to everything. (Except what's needed for the vehichle to stay running.) Can still drive it. What are possible problems? (AC does not affect anything )
  • Pennzoil High Mileage vs Castrol GTX High Mileage? My local auto store has 5 quarts of Pennzoil High Mileage for 16.99, but 5 quarts of Castrol GTX High Mileage on sale for 9.99$. Which one is better, or does it not even matter and I should just get the cheaper one? It's going in a 2002 Ford Focus ZTS with 155*** miles on it.
  • My ford focus is taking less gas? I bought a 09 ford focus a month ago and a full tank was 374miles until E. Then the next time i filled it up, i put premium in it. Then the next time i went to the gas station, i had 103miles until E, so i asked to put $24 of Regular 87 octane gas in my car. My car only took $18 worth and i only had 268miles until E. Did the premium gas have an effect on my car?
