Check your starter!
Cables and battery!
Then ignition and all that.

Make sure that your battery connections are CLEAN and tight!

What is possibly your problem is that the battery on your SUV is pretty low. The battery level has to be relatively high enough to get it to crank. If you think that it is the battery, then you can have it recharged, or just buy a new one.

Another possiblity is that you have a faulty starter. If it were the battery at fault for having a low charge, then it shouldn't crank at all once in a while. But since it does, it might be the starter having corroded a bit.

Hi so what you expect from such an old car and as it needs a new battery.

From what you described, my first guess would be the starter going bad.

It sounds to me like your ignition is the problem. I would start with the spark plugs, next the battery(I doubt it but check anyway), and finally the alternator. I'm guessing since the car is old it relies on a mechanical chain reaction that ends in friction creating a spark since simply sending a signal to the cylinders in the engine to start burning gas isn't going to happen with a car as old as you described(system controls need computers, none involved in old cars' manufacturing let alone the car itself if it's as ancient as you described.)

Sounds very much like a low voltage issue. Often due to battery on way out. Or high resistance in circuit. Check battery connections and wiring /joints/connections.
garage can easily check voltage and battery for you.

I have seen this with a vapor lock due to a head gasket leaking water into the cylinders. It forms steam which locks the engine up. Wait a few hours and it cooks down, the steam turns back to water and you can start the car. Next time you start it, look at the exhaust. You should not see any steam coming out. If you do, then you are getting water into the engine. Check your radiator and see if you are losing water. If you are, then you need to get the head gasket fixed.
