Is Jiffy Lube trying to rip me off?

I took my Ford E350 Super Duty Box truck in to Jiffy Lube today. It has 176k miles on it truck runs great I had them do a fully synthetic oil change, since I was already there and in a hurry I changed the air filter and then they told me the rear differential fluid needs to be replaced. It was a really grey color and again I had to have the truck back on the road and thought eh might as well. The total came out to $200 for everything. Then they also told me that my fuel filter needs to be changed as well as my automatic transmission needs to be flushed which I declined to do. I feel like these guys already ripped me off with the rear differential fluid change and are trying to do the same with the rest.

My truck was a former Budget rental truck, i'm pretty sure they maintain their vehicles no?

Added (1). Also on the comments section of my receipt it said noticeable engine oil leak and tranny oil leak. I checked and I honestly didn't notice anything. I feel like jiffy lube is just there to rip people of.

These days, those guys would lose their jobs if they didn't try and cross-sell you on every service they offer. You have to be able to say No.

Unless they didn't do the work that you paid for then they didn't rip you off.

Did you get the best deal? Can't say. Doesn't seem like that bad of a price. You were in a hurry and a full synthetic oil change runs around $60, more if it is a diesel. You can price these services at other shops. Like anything else, convenience and speed come with a higher price.

You could have said no to any of these things.

Yes. It's Jiffy Lube. That's what they do.

Check your owner's manual to see when the fluid and filter changes are necessary. They are all necessary at certain times and are just as important as oil changes.

Fluid flushes including transmission flushes are total bull and never recommended in the owner's manual. They are certainly ripping you off on that one. Unless you meant a fluid change (drain and refill like any other fluid change). That's normal.

Yes, they are trying to get as much money from you as possible but it's your responsibility to spend 5 minutes looking at your manual and seeing what you need and don't need. Otherwise you'll be paying a lot more to a mechanic who's trying to get as much money from you as possible…

They might have saved you $2000 in rear diff work, you should be glad they noticed it.

It's a tactic all shops do including dealerships. It's how they make their money. They draw you in with an oil change and then run you by any problems they may find or services they can sell you. It's not really ripping you off. Sure a shop can try to sell you a cooling system flush because your coolant looks like mud and your car may not break down tomorrow or the next day but over time it will corrode your freeze plugs, water pump, clog your heater core, etc.

They upsell. Got to make money some how since they don't make much doing 19.95 oil changes. Forget the flush on the transmission fluid and forget going back to jiffy lube. Transmission help find local shop at ATRA.COM to see if actually leaking from the transmission

Rip Off? Maybe. You have to realize that these places are there to upsell you on everything they do.

Yes, I've had them try to sell me a $35 air filter when it had a small grease spot on it - Walmart sells the filter for $18 bucks. YOU have to be smart about maintaining your vehicle. 176K miles is well past the point where the differential oil should have been replaced. I doubt that Budget ever changed it. It should be black, not grey.

When I'm forced to go to one of these places, I tell them upfront that they are to change the oil and filter only and they are not to even look at anything else. I usually do all that work myself.
