Could low oil or bad oil cause a car not to start?
I have a vehicle that won't start, but a "check oil" light comes on as I try to start it. The oil level seemed fine when I checked it, but the oil looks black. Could having low or bad oil be the reason why a vehicle won't start? In other words, will it possibly start if I add more oil or get an oil change?
Based on what I have read, the "check oil" light on the vehicle means that it is sensing that the vehicle is low on oil even if the levels are fine. It's a Ford Aerostar.
Added (1). The reason I'm asking about this is because my dad had a vehicle that wouldn't start once, and after he changed the oil it started fine.
No! It would start with No oil.(but don't)
Cars run with no oil and bad oil, that's why they tell you to check the level and change it. Because if you don't your engine will die. Not sure what happened to your day's car, maybe coincidence. The oil warning light comes on when you turn on the ignition, as there's no oil pressure until the motor starts and spins the oil pump. The light illuminates is also your way of confirming the bulb is not blown, and you should take a second to check all your lights before engaging the starter motor.
To your engine, check for fuel, ignition and air.
Not unless either condition was extremely bad…
All depends on the car. Sometimes the computer systems in certain cars will shut the engine down to protect it when it detects a low oil pressure condition due to an internal problem or very low oil.
Some expensive late model German cars will not. Your Ford Aerostar will start even if oil level is low.
Check the EEC power relay and the fuel pump relay. If there's no spark, check the crankshaft position sensor.
The oil won't effect the motor's starting unless the motor is seized. Check for spark and listen for the injectors to click while cranking the motor over. If neither spark or injector pulse is present you likely have a bad crankshaft sensor. Do you have fuel pressure? Have someone crank the motor over while at the same time you bang on the bottom of the gas tank with a 2x4 or rubber mallet. The fuel pump can start working again if that is the problem.
No. The oil pressure ligt should be on but it would not prevent a start or crank.
In general, on American cars, the START position of the ignition switch is also a warning light test. All the warning lights on your instrument panel should light when the starter is turning the engine.
The WARNING lights. Not the turn signal or high beam indicators.
Additionally, for your lack of automotive logic, there's no oil pressure until the engine is running, so the "oil" light would be on. There also is no charging until the engine is running, so a "battery" or "generator" light would also be on.
- What could cause my car to not stay running? I have a 99 ford contour. 4cylinder 2.0L. It cranks but will not stay running unless hitting the gas pedal. No check engine light. New MAF and Camshaft sensors. Got the car in feb and had new plugs and oil change. Could it be a clogged cat?
- Can a low oil light cause my 1990 ford ranger to not turn over? I started my truck a few days ago and it ran descent considering i need new plugs and wires, when i tilted it over on its side (only about six inches on the driver side), it had a small oil drip, when i tried to start it today it wouldnt turn over and whenever i turned the key, the check oil light came on, will it start if i add some oil to it?
- Can a bad thermostat in a car cause the tempature guage in the dash to not work? Or is the guage itself broke? I have a 1991 Ford ranger and have no idea if the engine is overheating because the gauge doesn't work. Thermostat or gauge? Of its the gauge do I have to replace the whole cluster?
- Low compression cause ticking? On my 2005 v6 ford mustang, i have a problem. All of the cylinders are at about 185-195psi except 2. 2 of them are at 170psi and both of those make a ticking noise when the engine is on and both of their spark plug gaps close when i start. Don't tell me i have the wrong plugs because i don't. I have tried 3 new OEM plugs on each and the same thing happens. What is wrong and how do i fix it?
