Will adding turbo to a ford raptor help increase mpg?
Will adding turbo to a ford raptor help increase mpg?
Generally no.
The idea of a turbo is to put MORE air and FUEL into the engine. Exactly the opposite of what you want to improve economy.
Only way that a trubo can help is if you fit a smaller turbo engine in place of a larger engine. Then if you drive with a light foot the smaller displacement and lower weight of the turbo engine should improve economy.
NO! Quite the opposite.
A turbo will add to the engine performance, but at a steep price, increased fuel consumption, and a shortened life for the engine, also more ware on the driving parts like gears, and wheals, and more.
If you even think about trying to increase MPG in a raptor then you obviously bought the wrong car.
I don't get people that buy gas guzzling vehicles and then become concerned about it's gas mileage. People that buy Raptors don't normally care about gas mileage. Buy a more fuel efficient vehicle next time. You bought the wrong car.
Never, you will use more fuel, so your MPG will go down, LOL.
And this is why none of these people work for any automotive company.
YES, a turbo charger will increase MPG because it actually causes the torque value of the engine to change slope.
Torque is what gets the vehicle of the line, and HP is what keeps it moving. When the slope of both HP and TQ is changed or enhanced by a turbo, then the MPG does increase.
A better option is a variable vain geometry turbo. It will yield a better overall tq and hp curve from idle, IE eliminating the "turbo lag". Situation.
FYI, Supercharging the engine will also increase MPG as well under the same principle. The argument between the two is always loss of hp by the belt of the superchager, but this is negated by the power in creates, IE why it is used in drag racing.
Anyhow. Do not listen to the obvious non knowing automotive people and research it a little more for your self.
Example, Chevy Sonic 1.8L non turbo, 34mpg hwy, chevy sonic turbo 1.4L 43.6mpg FYI, the engines are identical minus the.4 L overall. Look up any current model vehicle and you will find the turbo's to increase mpg.
FYI, to gain back the cost of a turbo you have to drive a significant amount of mileage. Also, you can locate some guys on the Raptor forum and discuss it there. You have to remember, that the fuel you use can also change the MPG rating by 3-5mpg. If you live in a state, like California or Oregon where Ethanol is mandated, you will find MPG numbers are lower. A 10% ethanol blend will drop your mpg of regular fuel by 5mpg. If you use premium it will reduce it to a loss of 3mpg.
If you live in an area that has non-ethanol, you will want to run premium. Think of this this way, on a car that has a 15 gallon tank, that is 3 dollars more per tank if the premium is.20 Cents more per gallon. But you will increase your MPG to the point it will be a wash.
On my turbo sonic, non ethanol with premium I will get 43.6 mpg on the HWY with A/C driving 75-80mph which is the speed limit here. If I use ethanol premium my car will get 38.7 mpg or so. So a good 5mpg loss. I have tested this several times. Also, you want to try different gas stations as well. On some vehicles, they actually run better on bargain basement gas like Costco, or corner store gas. So far, our 2007 Honda Pilot, our 2014 sonic and my F350 Diesel get worse mileage from Chevron and Conoco gas stations. It has to do with what ever additive they are putting in there. Also, if you watch the fuel trucks, they all come out of the same fuel holding station and just add the additives as they fill the tanker truck.
No the 6.2 and 5.4 Liter Triton V8s are decent size mils and the Ford Raptor is not a light truck. Your fuel economy will go in the gutter depending on how high you have the turbos dialed up expect something like 7 City 10 Highway at best.
- Adding a hitch to a 2001 Ford taurus SE? I know this isn't ideal but is it realistic to pull 1-2 canoes on a small trailer using your Ford Tarus SE?
- How to convert a ford ranger into a ford raptor? Hey guys and girls I had an idea and though I would ask you people and see if it's a possibility for me to to convert my 1998 xlt ford ranger 4wd 4.0l v6 into a ford raptor like can I put a ford ranger grill and lights on my truck or what can I do for my truck to look like a ford raptor in a way
- Can I save money by adding hho to my 1990 ford ranger? I always see these water generators online that claim if you add this to your already fuel burning vehicle it would make it more efficient. I love my little ranger but gas is so expensive and I drive long distances. It just doesn't seem like it could actually work or more people would be doing it right? Are the kits hard to put in? Is it worth my time/money? Will I actually save or is this just what they are claiming?
- Help Ford XR6 or XR6 TURBO? Looking at buying a new Ford xr6 Ute but the sales person is trying to upsell me to the XR6 turbo. Maybe because I'm a female he was giving very vague responses to my questions on the different specs and I was just hoping someone on here would tell me honestly which is the better buy.
