Why does my car battery keep draining in my 1979 Ford Thunderbird?
I have a 1979 Ford Thunderbird that keeps draining car batteries. I have purchased a new Optima Battery (red top). And overnight the battery drained completely. I do Not have a stereo system connected, neither is the air conditioning connected. There are no electronics connected. The starter is working fine. I have a new solenoid. When the battery is drained, it will not start from another car giving it a jump but is will an electric powered professional battery charger on 'jump mode'. Does anyone have any idea what could be draining my batteries?
To find a short, remove your positive battery cable, then hook up a test light or amp gage between the positive cable & terminal. (test light works fine). If it lights, you have a short. Now unhook the alternator wires,. If the light goes out, you have a bad alternator. Same goes for the starter. If those check out ok, start pulling fuses one at a time till you find the circuit with the short. Make sure the dome/courtesy lights are off while testing, as a bulb will register as a short.
You have a short somewhere. It will be fun tracing it!
Need new VOLTAGE REGULATOR, or ALTERNATOR or perhaps there's ROAD SALT and corrosion in your wiring harnesses! Start by power washing under the hood with GUNK orange engine cleaner spray that toughens up harnesses! Any AUTO ZONE can test your charging system for FREE! Replace them! Many older FORD cars had external regulators on them that go bad easily Use a BORG WARNER replacement part that is made to MUCH HIGHER standards! Get a BOSCH rebuilt alternator if you require a new one! It is made to much HIGHER standards than the factory one was if necessary, BUT KEEP engine bay SHOWROOM CLEAN at all times! Figure out a good way to clean harness connections using as NAIL FILE or sandpaper. BYE NOW
First thing to test is the alternator. If it has a diode shorted out it will drain the battery even with the engine off. Take it to an auto parts store and they will test your system.
- My new battery is draining too fast in my car, why this? My battery and alternator in my ford probe is new but it drains really fast after I drink only a few times but when I read online it says that I should be able to crank for 10 minutes I crank for far less than 10 minutes in the battery dies. What could cause it to die fast? There's no parasitic drain. Could the starter be bad, drawing too much amps
- Coolant draining from parked car but no leak identified? I drive a 2002 Ford Focus. I've been noticing my coolant draining fairly quickly, and my car has come close to overheating a couple times. I took it to a shop, who told me 3 times there was no leak, and that the issue was with the fan. Is this normal or should I try another shop?
- Why won't my car battery keep charge? I have a 2005 Ford expedition. I bought a new battery about 3 weeks ago and now it won't keep charge. Lights work but are dim and it just makes a clicking sound when I try to start it. Also last battery had a lot of corrosion on it. Any idea what it could be? I can't get it to a mechanic because it won't turn on.
