Why do ford triton engines have trouble with cam phasers?
Since the "Triton" branding extended to all 1997-2010 gas V8's and V10's found in Ford trucks, and the only engines effected by the cam phaser problems were some 2004 and 2005 3 valve 5.4L's, it's only a small subset of engines that were effected. But anyway, it seems that with the variable valve timing that the 3 valve 5.4L's had sometimes the mechanism that would rotate the camshafts would get stuck in one position or otherwise stop working. You tended to see it more often on trucks that hadn't had their oil changed on time, the solenoids that controlled the system worked off oil pressure, and could contaminated resulting in them no longer working properly.

The sound of the whining increases as the RPMs increase when pulling a hill or an A grade the whining will also get louder. The whining noise does not exist in park or neutral only when engaged in forward gears and reverse. The level of transmission fluid is perfect and was changed 23,000 miles ago. The overall mileage is 80,000 and has been well maintained since it was bought new by me.
