Which car companies are best for used cars?

I'm trying to buy a used car from a auction or dealership, and I know foreign cars are best for the long term, and I want something that will last me like 2-3 years without major mechanical problems that will cause it to go to a auto repair shop like every other month, something like (2002 & Up, depending on the type of car) so what are suggestions

American Car Companies:
Chrysler
Ford
General Motors

Foreign Car Companies:
Audi
Volkswagen
Volvo
Saab
Acura
Honda
Nissan
Infiniti
Mazda
Mitsubishi
Hyundai
Kia

So what are your opinions, seems like a lot of foreign cars have way more choices than american cars, and I know some foreign car companies are being made here in the us for some time now, but I'm choosing wisely when making the right choice, so what do you think?

Thank you for considering us in your car purchasing options! We're ready to welcome you to the Kia family with open arms. Remember when purchasing a car, it's important to think about maintenance costs, reliability and warranty. We hope to see you driving a Kia soon!

Based on my experience:
Best: Toyota, Honda, Ford, Mazda, Volkswagen(?), Acura, Kia
Worst: Chrysler, Volkswagen(?), GM, Mitsubishi

You noticed that i mentioned Volkswagen twice, it's a car that can either be very reliable, or very unreliable. I have no experience on the rest that i didn't mention. You can read consumer reports to help support your choice.

Toyota

I have owned just about every kind of car made and the american made cars are the only ones that are tough enough to hold up
