What tools will I need to buy to replace the starter on my 1991 Ford Thunderbird 5.0 LX?

A 1/2" socket, you could even get away with just using a 1/2" wrench.

The mounting bolts and battery cable are the same size

I've replaced several Ford starters but never on a '91 Thunderbird. For the ones I've done, I only needed a couple of wrenches. The starter should be located at the bottom of the engine, usually passenger side, and will be held on with two long bolts. These are probably 1/2 or 9/16 in size but you should double check as it's been a long time since I've changed a starter. There will also be a few wires attached that are held on with either nuts or snap-on fasteners for which you'll need the proper size wrench(es) or a flat head screwdriver, respectively. Remember to disconnect the battery before starting and good luck.

  • Why Ford uniform rental end up inside trunk of Crown Victoria behind the jack up tools? Why would someone put it and hide them inside my trunk? It's blue one piece clothes which only mechanics wear. Since I brought car from old man years ago, my tire got flat so I went in trunk and go behind the wall to get tools to jack car up and uniform with tiny blanket end up in there. Do they put this in every Crown Victoria when assembling in factory? You won't find it because it was hidden behind tools which you use to change the tire.
  • What tools do I need to change my brake pads? Explain in plain English to a non-mechanic. Send pictures even? Alright before I get into this, let me explain that I'm a 17 year old girl that has no one to do my brake pads, and I'm unable to transport my car to a shop. Recently bought a car that needs a brake pad change and decided it'd be a good learning experience to just do them myself. I've seen them done and also decided that if I **** something up that's my own problem. I have a 2005 Ford Taurus. My e-mail is nyarseniccatnip@gmail.com (Haha. Ironic.)
  • Can I replace a 1991 5.4l ford expedition engine with a 4.6l ford crown Victoria police interceptor engine? I have a expedition that was ran out of oil so it needs a new engine, we also have a 4.6l police interceptor that runs great. So I'm wondering if it can be done and what other work would also be needed?
  • Can a car have a starter relay and starter solenoid? I have a 1972 Ford thunderbird and I feel like it may have a starter relay as well as a starter solenoid. On the starter motor there's a starter solenoid. I know that for sure. On the fender of the car appears to have something that resembles a starter relay. I've heard some people tell me that they can't have both but is it possible that it could be that?
