Nothing is "better". It depends on what you want. Were the other answers not good enough?
Depends on the intended use of this relic.
Actually none of the above!
Ford 300 inline six!
Very bullet proof and more torque where it counts.
It is listed as #4 on the list of the ten best engines ever made.
Ford Truck forums praise it.
I own a 1974 with a 390, which is better then the 360 that came out of it. But given HP figures, Torque ratings and fuel economy the extra fuel the V8's use just isn't worth the dollar at the pump.
That depends on what you are using the truck for. Daily driver, the smaller gives better fuel economy, if hauling the larger will because it handles tow or haul better/easier.
For what purpose? Street cruiser? Off-road? Boat hauler? Work truck?
The 302 is a higher reving engine, made for a car. The 360 on up are truck engines, with a ton of torque. So what job will the truck be doing - Pulling a trailer? Hauling a load? Or driving to the market & hauling groceries? If your job requires torque, that's a truck engine job, so suggest the 390. Street driving with an empty bed is car-engine territory, so suggest a 302/351 Windsor.
I would avoid any 360 to 390 engines made from 1973 to 1976 still have the letter from ford saying some of them have weak metal parts ie block heads cranks etc they rebuilt my 1976 360 2 times it started burning oil at 12000 miles then again at 17000 i just replaced it with a 1966 390 engine no problems then
302- bullet proof
360- not so good
390- tons of torque- pass anything but a gas station
460- made for work- you will need a loan to keep fuel in it.
One you fail to mention
351 Windsor- good all around- medium towing- the one I would pick
- What's better the famous 454 bbc or the ford 460? I love both! But I do think ford is better. But you don't see people engine swapping 460s into trucks or cars. But I'm thinking a project f100/150 old school carb 460 candy blue and chrome would be sick with tons of power. Opinions? Suggestions?
- What Ford vehicles with a 302 motor comes with a 4 barrel carb (and only comes 302 with a 4bc)? I have a 1989 mustang gt motor and I'm making it carbureted and I'm looking for any vehicle with a 302 that carries a 4b. I'm going to a junkyard where they don't help with finding vehicles, so it would be helpful to know what vehicles only have a 302 with a 4bc, that way I can look it up on the website and know exactly where its at.
- Must I put premium gas in my 1965 Ford F100 390 V8 or can i put regular gas? I was told that it needs premium gas and premium gas only. But the guy who I bought the truck from said it was a myth and it takes regular gas. What gas does my Ford F100 390 v8 engine take?!
- Is a ford 390 better than a 351w? I got a 79 f150 with a 351w and i have a 390 in the garage would it be a good idea to swap it for more power
