What happens if I remove the cone within the intake hose of my 1991 2.3L Ford Tempo GL?

It has a HSC engine. Does the cone create a swirl in the air which the High Swirl Combustion engine needs? Or is it a silencer that I can remove to gain HP and fuel economy? I know these were lemons but it has no rust, was always garaged and has 130K KILOMETERS on it. See my sketch of it below… Thanks for your help.

What in the world is a "high swirl combustion engine"? Think logically, why would a piston possibly need the air to be "swirled" when mixing with the fuel?

On the other hand, the computer is designed for a certain amount of airflow, removing the "swirl machine" will not change anything. LOL @ the tiniest bit of extra air increasing HP.

Don't remove anything. Just put a K&N filter in the stock air box. Anything else you do will get less mpgs. That's a low compression high smog control engine. Don't try to make it something t's not.

More noise, more power, tiny MPG increase. Nice sketch, btw

You're on the right track but going the wrong way. The cone will be engineered to reduce reversion pulses at low rpm and stabilize airflow through the MAF so that fuel control and torque is best at low RPM. Nothing to do with swirl, that's supposedly all done at the ports and combustion chamber.
Removing the cone will help your very top end but at the expense of low end torque and gas mileage and everyone knows that the stop light grand prix is won with torque, how often are you on the track and I'm betting it's an automatic. Nuff said?

  • Where is the trunk safety release on a Ford Tempo? Mine doesn't have the release buttons in the glovebox and when I bought it the trunk wouldn't open. I got the back seat out but there's so much garbage and so little room I'm trying not to sift through all of it to find the safety release, does anyone know exactly where it's located?
  • Transmission on 93 ford tempo? It's a 2.3 HSC. Can i drop the trans separately, or do i need to pull engine and trans together? Never done a tempo before, Reverse is gone in it, so assuming i need to change whole trans unless someone has another suggestion?
  • Is the transmission from a '92 Ford Tempo compatible with a '94 Ford Taurus? My transmission went out on my 1994 Ford Taurus and I can get a 1992 Ford Tempo transmission for a much cheaper price. I would please like to know if they are compatible. Thanks so much in advance! I'm a college student and I honestly can't afford much else.
