I was going to go look at the junk yard for a aod trannsmition but then i dint know how to find it.

(Automatic over drive)tranny
As FoDaddy mentioned, the later models have the upgrades. To identify the year, look just above the pan rail on the drivr's side… You'll see E0, E1, E2… This corresponds to 1980, 1981, 1982… What you really want is an E8 or later (say E8-F2)if possible… Beware of the AOD-E which needs a computer to operate (crossover year was '93). Also, the the pre-86 models had a hole in the front pump which was drilled too close to the edge of a mating surface; so it's leak-prone. When rebuilding the trans, there's a myriad of mods to aid lubrication to critical areas (outflow to cooler, input shaft splines and rear bushing-This last mod is importamt if you're running 4.10 gears or lower)
Throughout the 1980's Ford had came out with the AOD as the inline 6 and 302 had the light duty overdrive automatic. The 5.8 including the 7.3 diesel had a heavier duty overdrive automatic. There's a difference between the AOD and E4AOD as the smaller engines had the light duty overdrive automatic while the larger engines had the heavier duty overdrive automatic.

Keep in mind the earlier the model the weaker the AOD will be, It was constantly upgraded over the years, but it was never used behind anything with more than 300 lb/ft of torque. It was never used behind anything larger than a 302. If you have a warmed over 302 or 351W you're going to need to have the AOD rebuilt and beefed up.
Yeah it was introduced i believe in 1980. I know they bolted up to the 302's
- Typical lib thinking? Ford had no idea when it happened, had no idea how she got there, no idea how she left, clueless who was there? And despite that every person she listed as a witness made a statement in a sense said Ford was wrong… The lib brain… Get even at Trump…> yep - Kavanaugh did it.
- Why are some Ford cars (like the Taurus and Focus) such unreliable cars? I'm looking at cars in the $3000 - $4500 range and I'm noticing a decent amount of Ford Taurus's and Focus's and out of all the cars that I see, these are two cars that just seem so unreliable. I test drove a Focus last year and it sounded like something was wrong with the engine.
- Why can't powerful cars tow like trucks can? I don't know if this a dumb question, but I don't understand why you can't, I know you aren't supposed to but why. If my 230 hp Ford Ranger can tow 6000lbs, why can't the 845 hp dodge demon tow something, it has way more hp, way more torque and 2 more cylinders. Does it have something to do with the suspension not being able to hold the weight or what?
- Is it weird that I think trucks are easier to drive than cars? I'm 17 and I've driven vehicles of different shapes and sizes. I recently noticed something a little strange. I got to drive a 2012 Ford F150 (after driving an Impala) and I noticed I had an easier time driving it. I usually drive a Ford Ranger and I think that's really easy to drive. If I drive a sedan, I have a hard time driving it. I actually learned to drive in a pickup truck. Is this weird that I have an easier time driving SUVs and pickups instead of a car?
