Transmission cooler replaced?
Last week I had a Transmission cooler replaced on 03 Ford expedtiton 5.4l. I put fluid in to drive to shop without any problems. The truck was fixed and after I paid went out back to drive it, it would only go in reverse and not move forward. I was told there were metal shavings and fluud was black and that I needed to replace transmission. The old transmission cooler had fell out of the bracket due to rusting and one day cause fluid to leak and have to be replace when driven. As far as I know I'm the 2nd owner. Thanks for reading my email. I will be patiently waiting for a response.
Sounds like it does need the transmission rebuilt. Find local shop at ATRA.COM for more help
You drove the vehicle with a leaking transmission. The transmission fluid does three things. It powers the transmission, it lubricates and it cools. The first moves your car, the last two protects the transmission. You can get the a second opinion from another garage and check for trouble codes and/or a broken shifter linkage or a bad vehicle speed sensor. But there's a good chance that the transmission needs replacement.
Do an OBD2 code check to see what's not working right.
It does indeed sound like the transmission needs to be rebuilt or renewed, if that's what you're asking.
So what is your question? You haven't asked one. If you are asking if the diagnosis on your transmission is correct, I would say yes, it needs to be repaired or replaced. A new one will cost around $1400 and the removal and installation cost will be between $1000 to $1600. Total cost, . Between $2400 and $3000. That's a lot for a car that is only worth $3000 to $5000.
Hi sadly this is all too common with old cars one thing leads to another so now you could be into a situation where repair of one part leads to another. The design idea of most car makers is now not to make cars that last for ever. Most took the lead from Volkswagen who make there cars to last for 7 years. So many now have built in osolecence.
If you haven't been changing the ATF every 60,000 miles and the ATF got black that's bad enough to cause damage to n automatic tranny. Top that by losing ATF and you likely had the transmission slip when it lost ATF. Once an automatic slips it's done dancing.
There were metal shavings and the fluid was black, but they didn't tell you until after you tried to leave with the repaired car and it wouldn't move forward?
Hmm.
Did you check the fluid level?
I wonder why they didn't SHOW YOU the metal shavings? Or the black fluid?
- Will the transmission need replaced if he changes the motor? My dad has a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500. Right now it has a 351W motor. He wants a 390 (original motor to the car). If he was to change the motor, would the transmission need replaced too? The rebuilt transmission has less then 20k miles on it since it was rebuilt.
- Will a Ford Explorer transmission exchange for a ranger transmission? I have a 2002 Ford Explorer 4x4 with a 4.0 engine. The truck needs a new transmission and I was wondering if a transmission from a 2002 ranger 4x4 with a 4.0 will bolt up to the explorers.
- Which vehicle is cooler for a high-schooler to have? So I know this is kind of a stupid question, but which would be cooler for me to get (or just the better option), a 99 Ford ranger xlt extended cab 4wd (red) or an 02 Mazda protégé lx (black)? It's my first real car that I'm paying for, I had a 97 vw cabrio convertible that I got from my brother and crashed… Also, which one would be more fun to drive? They are both manuals (automatics are boring…)
- My transmission has failed due to a recalled part does Ford have to replace the whole transmission or just the recalled part? I have a 2005 Ford Freestar minivan one night when I was driving home the transmission went out on it while I was on the highway. After doing some research we found that the torque converter is a recalled part on this model. If the torque converter is the reason for the transmission failure does Ford have to replace my whole transmission as well or just the torque converter?
