Everything Henry did was to improve production and performance of the production line, improve quality and that was largely done by decreasing turn over, which also reduced training costs, reduced scrap or rework and improved quality while also speeding up the production line.
In the end, he did it to reduce waste, improve quality and profits.
Up until then American workers were exploited by the Barrons of the day. Ford wanted workers who felt like they mattered to the success of the company. Which they did. Plus doing repetitive work like that monetary incentive is needed to not implode. Pus he nurtured a class of people that were going to buy his car.
