Why is the 2002 Ford Taurus sedan considered a full size car?

Taurus has a 108.5 inch wheel base
Corvair has a 108 inch wheel base

The Corvair can't be any newer than a 1969. Comparing apples and oranges, aren't you? My 1969 Plymouth Fury III had a 122-inch wheel base. It got 7 miles per gallon and I, all 6' of me, could lie down in the trunk lengthwise without bending my legs. When I worked on the engine. I would get inside the hood and stand with both my feet on the ground, there was that much room under the hood--and it had a mammoth 440 cubic inch engine (i.e. 7.2, liter) that had so much room around it that when you opened the hood it looked like it was suspended in the air.

"Full-size" cars have been shrinking since the mid 1970's when the US Government started placing mandatory fuel economy standards on vehicle manufacturers. Before then, a full-sized sedan could carry six large adult passengers AND enough luggage for a two-week vacation in relative comfort. Manufacturers have been forced to make their cars smaller and lighter weight to meet Government imposed fuel mileage regulations. These days, a full-size sedan is lucky to carry FOUR adults and an over-night bag.

Because cars have been made smaller since the Corvair.
Your mistake is that you are comparing modern cars with cars from way back. (apples to oranges)

  • Would it be weird if I bought a full size van as my first car? I'm 17 and I want to buy my first car. I'm used to driving SUVs and pickup trucks. I have always liked full size passenger vans. I like being able to haul things and customize it. I really like the 1992-97 Ford E150 XLT 7 passenger van. Would it be weird if I bought one as my first car? I'm talking about a van.
  • Aren't you amazed by the capabilities and the size of today's full-size pickup trucks? I drive a 2011 Ford Ranger XLT 4x2 with a 4.0 liter V6 (~245 ci.) engine. I was looking up the specs for early-mid 1960s F100s (considered full-size), and they have nearly the same GVWR, towing capacity, payload, horsepower, wheelbase, and height as my "compact" truck. In your opinion, do you think today's full-size trucks are amazing or too fancy/over-sized (a traditionalist like me)? P.S.: I like all American vehicles
  • If a car causes another car to swerve and spin-out, is it considered hit-and-run if they leave the scene? On the way to work this morning, I saw a Ford truck cut off a smaller car and the poor car spun out in the rain and ended up facing the opposite direction. This caused the traffic to stop because it looked like the vehicle wouldn't start. The ford truck most likely knew he did that but kept going, instead of stopping. He didn't hit the car or any cars at all during the time. If he didn't actually hit anything, is it still considered hit and run? Should he have stopped?
