Which car is the best first car? - 1
I'm 16 and I'm going to be saving up to buy a car. I want to spend $1000-$5000. I will likely have it all the way through college. I'm looking for comfort, safety, space (I'd be hauling my stuff to college), and winter capability. Here is what I like.

-2000-07 Mercury Sable LS Premium
-2005-07 Ford Five-Hundred Limited AWD
Which one should I get? I'd like to stick with a V6 that's either FWD or AWD.
Ford Taurus, Mercury Sable and Ford 500 are all pretty much the same car. Just pick the one you can afford and go for it.
If you can find a 2006 or later Taurus/Sable/500 in your price range it would be a good one… That is, the one you find at your price is the one to get. The 2002-2005 were troublesome and the 2003 had awful (even legendary) automatic transmission problems.

Honda or Toyota Both are generally reliable and economical
Go with awd over fwd. Pick one with good gas mileage (gas is expensive)
