What is the Best First Car?

I have about 6 weeks until I purchase my first car and I'm looking on this site http://www.carcomplaints.com/ at complaints owners have had about their cars and I'm already scaring myself from purchasing certain vehicles. I'm trying to pick between a 2003-2005 Ford Focus (though I've read this car has some major issues that can come up with its engine and at times people having issues with the car accelerating by itself, which scares me), 2003-2005 Ford Taurus, 2002 - 2004 Pontiac (any of them), or a 2000 Honda Civic (which seems to be the car with the least amount of issues, but will cost the most), or a 2000 - 2002 Honda Accord. I have a max budget of $3,300, though I would be willing to go up to $3,500 if I go with the Honda Civic if I find a reliable one. From this list, what do you suggest? Also is there any car that is not on this list that you suggest?

Added (1). I just got my license this past Friday, so thankfully I'm a license driver now!

What can go wrong from a car sitting a few months?

My car has been sitting in my grandparent's carport for a few months. I tried to jump start it today, the lights turned on and all the electronic stuff worked but it wouldn't start. Do I just need to try again or could it be the starter or something? It's a 1998 Ford Taurus.

I have a 1997 Ford Taurus. Yesterday I went to start my car?

Added (1). I have a 1997 Ford Taurus. Yesterday I went to start my car. Lights and radio came on but it won't turn over and start. My ignition lock cylinder was very loose when turning the key and when I tried to turn it off the lights stayed on. Tried replacing the lock cylinder today but it did not make a difference. Any idea of what it could be?

On my ford taurus2002 fuses?

I went to check them. Say there are 20. Some say good some not. I pulled out the ones that checked bad, but they are not blown. What could be happening to my lemon!

Should I buy an older car?

I currently drive a 2000 Ford Taurus. The car has served me well, but it's too big, does not have A/C, and gets terrible gas mileage. It has low miles - only 129,000 - and it was my first car. It has recently been to the mechanic A LOT and I think I bought a car from an era of bad American cars. I'm getting tired of it and really want something smaller and more fuel efficient.

My friend owns a 1997 Corolla. He loves the car, gets excellent gas mileage, and it rarely breaks. I found one selling on Craigslist that only has 115,000 miles on it and is in excellent condition selling for $3,500.

I'm wondering if anyone has had experiences with old corollas. Would it be a mistake to trade a 2000 Ford Taurus for a 1997 Corolla? Or does it really matter?
