My mom wants to get a new car but wants to trade the car that works?

We have 2 cars a 2002 ford Taurus with 87,000 miles that is falling apart but she can drive it. The other is a 2005 ford mustang with 56,000 miles that I drive and she can't. Both are automatic, she's just short and the mustang is too low. She wants to trade in the mustang and buy an compact SUV and keep the Taurus for several more years but the gas pump reader is broke, the signal doesn't stay put, and the steering wheel doesn't turn properly. The mustang is practically new, it has the original tires and just a few dents and scratches. It hasn't been in any accidents, but it has problems. The problem lies mostly with the gear shift. It gets stuck in winter and and when changing the gear from one drive to another it goes into neutral. Doesn't do it when driving.

I'm not sure what to tell her, I'm trying to convince her to trade in the Taurus and get a new car but she's convinced it is a better deal to trade the mustang. I don't think it's a good idea to trade the car that works instead of the car that doesn't, ultimately it's her decision but I want her to make the right decision.

What's your opinion, Trade Taurus or Mustang for a new car?

Mother knows best. She is no doubt also trying to keep you away from the Mustang.

Sounds to me as if she could save a bunch of money making you move out!

First the Mustang tires need replacing for safety. Tires deteriate over time.
Yours are 12 years old.
Why have you not maintained the cars?
87000 miles is no distance.
Poor maintenance kills cars.
Proper care gives you reliable long lived cars.
The cheapest option is to get a good mechanic to look at both and quote to sort them out.

Whom is paying for it all? I suspect mom is. The mustang is not perfect but may well have a better trade in value. Economics as well as desire etc need to be balanced.
the Taurus fuel reader ought to be a cheap fix, signal indicator also not a major issue. Though steering may need more expensive remedy depending on why it was put out from true!
though at first glance we may feel getting rid of older car is best result. We may be looking a bit selfish here. She can't drive the Mustang.( who owns it?) if we want a happy mom we ought to be looking at things from her point of view.
why not get a trade on value for either car and work that against fix costs for Taurus? Then have her mae a decision.

They're old cars. Get the upgrade. Also, how are the miles so low? I've had a new car for almost 2 years and it almost has 40K miles.

She'll get much more money on a trade in for the Mustang.
Why should she keep a car she " can't drive "?
You could get a job and fix up the other car.
Problem solved.

  • I have a 2000 dodge caravan and the rear heat works great but the front heat blows cold? The blower motors all work fine, has new water pump and brand new coolant. The top vents in the dash blow lukewarm warm but if you switch it to defrost it comes out ice cold but the rear heat still blows super hot air. Coolant level is full. I've read about the blend door could that be the issue? Could a coolant line to the front dash be clogged? I'm a ford mechanic but kinda stumped and have never worked on a dodge.
  • How does a trade-in works at a company? My car is financed and still has 10000 to go. Lets say i wanna trade it in for a brand new car at ford which costs 31,500. if they value my car for 8000 dollar, how would they calculate it? Will they take off 8000 of the original price and add 2000 dollars or would they just add 2000 dollars to the original price? 10000 *dollars*
  • Ford F 450, 1997, gas gauge works, but switch won't go the second rear tank? I replaced the switch same thing, only reads front tank and rear tank stays full. I had the solenoid replaced on the frame 15 months ago, could that be bad again, that is over $400? I have two gas tanks, front and rear. Switch won't switch to rear tank? Reads front tank only, even when switched to rear tank. I replaced the switch, cost $62. The rear tank is full, Edith. It is full because I can't access the fuel.
  • Noise works, but when I push it, it also makes a clicking/rattling noise? I have a 2012 Ford Focus, and while the horn works, and sounds (as it normally does), when I press it, it also makes a weird clicking/rattling noise (also kinda like a jingle sound - hard to describe). It sounds as if it's coming from behind the center console/under the center console, but it's hard to tell. Any ideas what it could be? With any answers - any advice on how to fix it? Question should say HORN Works
