Multifunction switch- Ford?

I have a Ford Taurus, 1995. I pressed the hazard button and those didn't work, and suddenly neither did my turn signals. I brought it to a shop and was told it was the multifunction switch. What I want to know is, is this a common problem with Fords/Ford Taurus. I got charged a huge fee to "diagnose" this at one dealer, when I called another he told me over the phone what the problem likely was. So is the MFS a common problem in Fords?

Ford has so many common problem it's hard to say. (To Ford's credit, their cars are also very fault tolerant, as least until recent years.) The multifunction switch is the engine starter switch, which also switches numerous other functions. It is the same switch you turn with the engine start key. In my experience, MFS is not a common problem with any model but, because it is a moving part, they will eventually have a problem. They are costly to replace as you are finding out, but it will likely be the only one until you next car. Here is one recommendation. If you are hanking a lot of keys and baubles and such on you key ring, try lightning up at that extra weight does "accelerate" wear and tear on that ignition switch when turned, and just hanging in there.

Looks like you should have just left those flashers alone and waived and flapped your hand out the side window. (joke)

Chevys have so many problems everything is garbage on a Chevy mostly motor and electrical problems and rust problems thin metal Fords gave very small or no problems. Not very common for fords to have problems.
