Low growling sound while in park on my car?

I have a 2000 Ford Taurus, 150,000 miles, when I drove home today, as I put it in park, I noticed it started to make a low growling/grinding sound. When I switched out to neutral or drive or reverse, the sound went away. I have also noticed that when I'm parked uphill (like I'm now), it is harder to switch to drive or reverse. So my question is what that growling/grinding sound could be?

You probably have worn out the gear for park. Yes it is a gear. Brjng it to a dealer

Park is not a gear, but a pawl like finger that catches on a series of slots similar to the way a gear looks. It sounds like the idle is too high and the spring pressure on the pawl is too light or the finger is worn. You can leave it or have it looked at. I would use the parking brake as well, and not trust park until it was looked at.
Do not take it to a dealer, but an automatic transmission specialist instead.

  • Why won't my car come out of park? When I tried putting my 1976 Ford Gran Torino into neutral to push it back because it doesn't stay running it wouldn't go out of park I even went under the car to put it into neutral because the linkage is messed up and it still didn't go out of park can someone please tell me what's wrong?
  • How to negotiate on a new car and how low can you price the car? I'm trying to buy a brand new 2014 car and these are my options. Ford Mustang I've seen it priced as low as 17,500 Chevy Mustang 18,300. Volkswagen Passat 16,700. How do I go about negotiating and what how much do you think I can get any of these cars for priced at the lowest.
  • My car dies when in park? I have a 2003 Ford Explorer with over 180k miles on it. I bought this car a year ago, and I haven't had any problems with it until now. Every time I put it in park it sounds like it going to cut off. Yesterday it finally cut off by itself. It starts up and runs average, however it is a little shaky while sitting at a traffic light. I'm not familiar at all with these kind of issues and would appreciate any suggestions as to what can be causing this.
  • I have a 2004 ford explorer XLT. I'm unable to get the car out of park. My break lights do work? I'm at an incline with rear facimg downwards. I've located the break shift interlock slot but not exactly sure how to override it. And yes I do have my foot on the break when switching.
