Car goes from 0 to 6000 RPM when I start it up?

It's a Ford Taurus '98. As soon as I start the car the RPM meter shows it kick up from 0 to 6000. What's wrong, and what can I do?

Is the gauge sweeping, or is the actual engine rpm redlining? If the rpm is redlining then check the signal voltage from the tps, should be about.7 volts at idle

  • When I start my truck my RPM's are very low (almost stalling) until I tap the gas? I'll start the truck and the RPMs will sometimes automatically go to below 1 then start dying out. I have to tap the gas quick and the RPM's will jump to around 3 then it will start the idle process. The truck runs fine otherwise I'm just concerned it might cause future problems. • What RPM should my car idle while driving and what RPM should I shift? I have a 2003 Ford Mustang V6. 5 speed manual transmission. This is not the first manual car I've owned, but I'm curious. I never really look but I've read in some places that in order to save gas you should shift at 2 RPM before I used to shift at around 3-3.5 RPM. Also what's a good RPM my car should idle at while I'm in gear? Let's say I'm driving in 3rd gear. What's the ideal RPM to stay at before needing to shift.
  • Low RPM harms for carbureted car? With ford pinto engine, my car user manual says, don't drive your car with low rpm. And there's most efficency area on RPM gauge from 2500 to 4000. Like we all see in bus or trucks. max. Torque @4000 rpm so if my car EFI, i can say high gear low rpm brings economy but with carburetor i can't say anything. should i use my car around 2500rpm in urban? any experience with ford pinto weber carby engine?
