Remanufactured Ford Long Block Engine. When should I get first oil change?

Recently had a Ford remanufactured 2.5L 4cyl long block engine replaced in my car. Other than obviously not beating on the engine, I'm curious as to when to get the first oil change. I've came across a few different answers ranging from 1k miles to 2.5k.

I'm creeping up to 1k mile on the engine and would be grateful for insights.

I usually do the first change at about 500 miles. That will get rid of metal particles from machining and rag fibers which can plug the filter. After that I go to the factory recommended change interval.

While newer motors are built to tight tolerances, I feel that the first oil change will have some metal from the break in. I don't think you could go wrong with either oil change period. I personally would change it at 1000 miles. Just remember, oil is cheaper than a rebuilt motor.

With a fresh rebuilt engine the first oil change should be around 500 miles, then 2,000 miles every time after that!

Consider the remanufactured engine to be the same as a brand new one. Do the oil and filter changes on the same schedule as when the car was new. READ the owner's manual!

Now is good; 1000 miles (or rather earlier) for the first change on a new engine or block.

As others say, the changes should be on the same schedule as with a brand new engine/vehicle.

And don't forget the oil filter!
If anything changing that's even more important than the oil.

The filter is what captures any contaminants, you could even change that at half the oil intervals for the first few thousand miles, it's cheap and can't hurt.

I would have done it at 500 miles but change it at 1000 miles since you're almost there. Be sure to save some of the oil and the filter. If you're diligent you'll have the oil analyzed and have the filter cut open and looked at to be sure your new engine isn't "making metal" and is breaking in normally.

It never hurts to change the oil. Just change it at 1,000 miles and use a factory oil filter. Change the oil every 3,000 miles or every 5,000 miles if running synthetic oil. Check the oil level every 1,000 miles between your oil changes and top it up so it never drops below half way between the upper and lower dipstick marks.
That's how to get the most miles out of a motor.

I had a 1950s FORD flathead rebuilt a few years ago. When they finished the install they asked that I return for a FREE oil & filter change before 250 miles.

The rebuild shop paid for the oil change and cut the filter open to look for metal in the oil.

Few hundred or a thousand

Put a magnet on the oil pan, that will help remove any suspended particulate in the meantime.

As an engine overhaul mechanic, I developed a schedule of oil changes for engines that I rebuilt.

Start-up, camshaft break-in (as required) and valve train adjustment on the engine stand. Cycle several times, hot-cold. Retorque cylinder head bolts if required. Dump the oil and filter. I used thinner break-in oil.

Next oil/filter change in car in 500-1000 miles.

Next oil/filter change in 2000 miles.

Then change oil/filter on standard maintenance plan.

Break-in is wear-in.
The beginning of a new or rebuilt engine's life has the most micro metal in the oil.

Please understand that a production automobile has a lubrication system that does not filter the oil 100% I don't have any real data about what percentage of the oil that goes through the oil pump, actually goes through the oil filter.

I would guess at perhaps 25%

The remainder bypasses the oil filter.

Change your oil and filter now.

  • When should I get my first oil change? I bought my 2014 Ford Focus SE in January new. I now have about 4,600 miles on it will I get a notification or something? Okay I'm not an idiot. I usually follow the oil change sticker I get from the dealer but since I bought it new it doesn't have one. I read the owners manual when I first bought it and it said I will get a notification on my dashboard between 5 and 10 thousand miles I think. I just was wondering if anyone with this car has had their notification come on.
