Will a catalytic converter for a 6cyl 3.0 work on my 4 cyl 2.3?

I own a 2004 Ford ranger with a 2.3L engine, but I wasn't able to find any catalytic converter for a good price, so I was wondering if a catalytic converter for a 3.0L would work fine on my car, since Catalytic converters for that engine are more widely available, thus cheaper.
Btw I need the rear Catalytic converter, thanks

No

If you live in a state that uses the California standards for emission controls this could be seen as a violation.
Because you specify "rear" I suspect you have a "California" emissions vehicle.
The Walker part number for a direct bolt on is 82523.
If you have to conform to CAFE it must be CAFE compliant.
The 3.0 unit I think will take some work to make fit, in that case a "universal" type unit might prove to be the easiest to use.

Just order a Walker brand converter from Advance Auto. Why take the chance of putting a converter on that still lets the codes set? The inlet and outlet connections for the converter may have a different flange or different size pipe.
Many 6 cylinder motors have two pre-cats built into the exhaust manifolds and if there's a third converter it likely doesn't have the same amount of catalyst needed in your 4 cylinder set up.

No.

Spend the money and get the correct cat converter for your car. It will likely end up being cheaper in the long run.

Catalytic converters ARE NOT for 6 cylinder or 4 cylinder engines.
That said, one matching the the VEHICLE designer used is best.

  • What parts will I need for a 2005 Ford Taurus 3.0L SFI DOHC 6cyl that has been sitting for 2 years? Right now my list includes: battery, wiper blades, air fliter, front and rear brake pads and all 4 tires? Also what mechanic services will I need? So far that lists includes: a tune-up, oil change, and an engine flush. Your help would be very appreciated.
  • On a 2000 ford ranger, will driving it without a catalytic converter cause valve issues? My ford ranger has had the cat removed (not by me!) and it is causing an O2 sensor code, of course, and an overly rich exhaust and poor fuel milage. Now, I know it needs fixed and I will when I get the time to get it to a muffler shop, but my question is, will driving it for a little while right now cause any valve trouble or any damage elsewhere?
  • Do I need a catalytic converter? I have a 2000 Mustang Ford V6 3.8L I looked under the car and I did not see 1 catalytic converter, I saw some pictures supposedly I has 4? But mine just has 2 long pipes that just go from the engine to the mufflers and then exhaust pipe. It smells like gasoline when I start up the car. Will this damage anything?
  • P420 Code. O2 Sensor or Catalytic Converter? I drive a 2012 Ford Focus manual 5 speed. I recently had a P0420 code come up in my check engine light. Driving wise, the car runs fine. It runs smooth idle with no bumps or hiccups. Would this code more than likely point to the O2 sensor vs converter since the car is driving with no problems. **One thing that did recently happen was the cruise control has stopped working as well as the gear shift light stopped illuminating**
