When should you use overdrive on a truck?

My friend just got a 2000 Ford Ranger and we noticed a button that said O/D. We were wondering what that was and when it is required to be used.

Overdrive should always be turned on, unless you are towing or going up hills and you don't want the truck shifting into the last gear. For example, if it is constantly having to downshift to keep up speed, you may want to force it to use the lower gear until you are in a better area for that gear to maintain

HI, anytime you are going to be going 45 mph or over for a few miles. It is not recommended to use OD if you are just driving in town.

Always unless towing. On a nice flat road towing 2500 lbs or so, use the od. Anything over that or a hill, click off.

Read your owners manual page 113.

  • Under/overdrive problems? I have a 1999 Ford Ranger that is shifting okay in overdrive but not in under. The light is not on. We have already checked filter. Can any one help me please?
  • Overdrive on a my 95 Ford thunderbird? I have a 95 Ford thunderbird… The question is, what is the overdrive for… I know on trucks its used to pull trailers and go up steep inclines but I don't know why I have the option to use it or not on my Tbird. And what will happen if its on? Its the V6 3.8.
  • Why is my overdrive not working? I have a pretty old mustang it's ford mustang 2000 with 194k miles and when i turn the car on I assume it's on since the OD off light doesn't show up, but when I drive it doesn't go passed 40MPH, but when I turn it off, it goes way faster. Isn't it supposed to be the other way around? This just happened out of know where.
  • Does anyone have a Ford Focus or a car with overdrive button? Need advice on the overdrive? Button! I'm confused. When I start my car, the overdrive [off] button goes off. Do I have to push the button on the gear shifter to turn it on? Or am I already in overdrive? I've read the manual and am still confused. I know that when I see overdrive off that it is off, but there's nothing to say it is on. Help! My question is even confusing, I know! Sorry!
