What's the average cost of an engine replacement?

I have a ford ranger 3.0 v6 with 112k miles, blown engine, my mechanic is usually extreemely cheap ($30 for spark plug replacement on The same ranger 3.0 v6) but hes charging me 1,000 to replace the engine which seems a little much. Am i right?

$1000 for labor? That sounds reasonable.

If he only want to charge $ 1000, then go for it BUT! You need to know what you are getting for the $$… If the replacement is a used engine, then don't do it… There's no way to know if a used engine will be good for 10 years or 10 days

Expect to pay about $2,000 just for the engine, and maybe $1,000 for the labour of swapping it over.

If he's doing it cheaper than that, then he's putting a used engine in. That's OK if you are short of $$ and he gives you some sort of warranty.

Why so much? It's the whole freaking engine. That big metal thing in the middle of the engine bay, with all the wires and pipes connected to it. It's an expensive part, and it's a lot of work to swap it over.

As usual people like you ask stupid questions and give no details, haha. All you talked about is spark plugs and the miles on the old eng you destroyed. You didn't say anything about the replacement eng. He wants to sell you. So, you question is just dumb. No one can answer an incomplete question.
