What did ford quit makeing the ford ranger?

Never technically.

People wanted bigger trucks which were a lot more profitable for Ford to make. Regardless Ford is coming out with the Ranger again for 2019, but it is like a completely different truck.

Making.

Ford never quit manufacturing the Ranger, they just stopped selling them in the US.

Demand and profitability reasons - the same reason ANY company stops making a product/model.

It was too small, too underpowered and too cheaply made.

Ford never stopped making the Ranger they just stop selling it in the US At the time they stopped selling it in the US the demand for small trucks had dried up. You could buy a full sized Ford F-150 for about the same price of a Ranger. However now that the demand is back Ford will be selling the Ranger in the US starting with the 2019 model year.

Because Ford has F-150, the company's most fuel-efficient full-size pickup.

The Ranger became uncompetitive, It never saw any real updates after 2001. Ford did however update the F-150 with much greater regularity. It got to the point where you could get F-150 that was more fuel efficient, more powerful, offered more payload, towing, and interior space for not a lot more money. Consequently Ford didn't see that many of them towards the end it's production run.

The cost to build it was an issue, the Ranger saw it's last major revision in 1998, so the tooling had been paid for by the mid/late 2000's. The problem was the it was mainly build in union plants, which raised it's price, whereas it's primary competition (Tacoma and Frontier) were built in the US in non-union plants. Ford was left with relatively expensive, outdated truck that's sales were being cannibalized by another product it offered, So it went away.

The didn't… They did stop selling it in the US though.
