Small trucks, good on gas? Suggestions?

I'm going to be buying a small truck here in a few weeks. I've been looking mainly into Ford Rangers, I'm a girl who has no experience with trucks and I'm really needing some good advice on what small trucks would be best on gas. I need something handy that could haul a dirt bike and a few things here and there, but one that is also good on gas for driving long distances. Thank you in advance for your help, I really appreciate it!

Agree with Bill. More to consider, there are two engines offered on the Ford Ranger, the 4.0L V6 and the 3.0L V6, both of which I have owned. The 4.0L is a gas hog, don't buy it. Yes it has more power, but it isn't worth it, only got around 17MPG Hwy.
The 3.0L would get a steady 30MPG on the freeway between Boise Id and Salt Lake City UT. That was in 2wd form, if it was a 4wd it would be around 22-24mpg.

FYI, Full GM trucks since 2007 have displacement on demand. When on the freeway, you switch to economy mode and the engine shuts off 4 cylinders. My friends 2009 Silverado gets 27mpg on the freeway. If he stays out of the gas pedal around town, he gets 15-20mpg.

Newer vehicles have 6-8 speed transmissions, so this is how a new full size truck can get in the mid 20mpg.
If you are curious about real world numbers look at fuely.com People post their real numbers there. But also pay attention if the numbers posted are City or HWY. That make a huge difference.

Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier or Ford Ranger will all get around 20mpg in town and up to 25 mpg on open road.

No, no small trucks are good on gas… And by the time you go through the headache of purchasing, insuring, fueling, and maintaining one… Only to find out it won't fit anything in the back or tow anything, you'll wish you'd just got a full sized truck.

A utility trailer is better for occasional hauling, and pretty much any mid sized car or small crossover/SUV can tow one.
