Should I replace my 99 Ford Ranger 3.0 auto with a 302 or keep stock?

My 99 Ranger is starting to die at the engine and transmission. I'm planning to keep the truck because it's sentimental but should I replace the 3.0 with a 302 or should I either rebuild the 3.0 or replace with another 3.0?

Get a 351 Cleveland.

Depends on your finances. The 302 swap won't be cheap.

If you install any other engine, you'll need the complete wiring harness and computer from the donor vehicle.

SWAP it out for a long block, it will get you up and running faster.

Rebuilding or getting another 3.0L would be far easier and cheaper. Vulcan 3.0L's are near ubiquitous, and can found everywhere for not much money. But a 302 would be cool, but it would also be expensive, and potentially illegal if you have to do emissions testing. The 302 swap was easier on pre-98 Rangers due to the older models have a more swap-friendly front suspension design, pre-96 models didn't have OBDII to deal with. It's doable on the later Rangers, but it's more involved and more expensive. Personally, I'd look a 3 valve 4.6L swap, it'll bolt up to your existing transmission and offer more power and better fuel economy than the 302, it's also something you don't see every day.
