I need to find TDC on a 91 ford ranger it is currently out of time and i havee no knowledge of how to fix it?

I've tried alignin the gears with notches matchin the picture in the book but that only made it worse. Also one time i had it goin good but the tension puly wiggled loose and everything spun now i don't know where anything is at

Take the spark plug out of no.1 cylinder. No.1 is at the front of the car. Rotate the engine slowly with a socket on the crankshaft nut. Place a finger over the spark plug hole. When you feel compression starting the piston is approaching TDC. Check the mark on the crankshaft pulley which should be near it's reference mark on the crankcase.
