Check the part number - if it is different then it will not physically fit and/or not have the correct output.

Go to a auto parts and have them pull up the part #'s for each size engine and see if their the same.
The mounting brackets may be your problem if their not the same.

It can't be that much more money to just get the right one.

3.0L and 4.0L are the size of the engine. It has NOTHING to do with the alternator. It's probable that BOTH engines use the same alternator.

The OEM part number for the 3.0L is GL8706RM
The OEM part number for the 4.0L is GL8706RM

Both engines use the same alternator. There's no difference between them.

If you already have a used alternator and can't look at both alternators to see if the pulley is the same and the harness connector plugs are similar you shouldn't be playing mechanic!
