88 ford ranger. Idling at 1200-1500 RPMs and gets 12 MPG. What is wrong?

The only thing i have done to it was clean the intake with B12. I also used jb40 with that. Seems like sometime after that this happened. The truck runs great, its just idling high and its using alot of gas.
Some trobleshooting tips would be cool.
I don't want to go replacing a bunch of stuff i don't need too.
I appreciate your help.

Look for a vacuum leak first.

Very common issue is deteriorated vacuum lines. A vacuum leak will cause it to think you have it in partial throttle and result in the conditions you described. Go over all of your vacuum lines and check for deterioration or damage. If you find the culprit pull it off and take it into your local parts store. Most of them will have vacuum line by the foot and all you will have to do is match up the right size. Last time I needed some it was like 29 cents a foot.

  • 2006 Ford Ranger, lack of power and rough idling, what could be the problem? I have a 2006 Ford Ranger manual 4 x 4 sport, with 160,000 km (100,000 miles) that I bought back in August. It ran well until today. On my way to work, I drove a few blocks when I noticed when I accelerated there was little power, and it was idling rough. I drove it back home and noticed there was this black soot coming out of the exhaust. I can't have it seen until the 2nd, so I'm just looking for any insight on what the problem can be.
  • 2000 ford ranger stalling and shutting off while idling? I have a quick question, last night I ran over a deer, the truck started stalling and would not pick up speed and accelerate Like it suppose to. The muffler was hanging and the oxygen sensor cable came unplugged, could that be the issue? Or any other ideas? The bottom looks solid nothing is damaged or bent, I did plug the oxygen sensor back, but no luck
  • Why do my rpms go up and down while idling? I drive a 1997 ford Mustang v6, when I'm in idle the rpm guage goes up and down between 1 and the half mark. I know it's not just the guage because the engine clearly is review up and down with it. Should I take it in somewhere?
  • Good car from $4k-$6k that gets 24 or more MPG? I'm needing a new car. I have $6000 in hand and I don't do payments. Preferrably 2 door with 4-5 seats. The MPG I would like to have is 24 and up MPG. Please no Fords.
