1998 Ford ranger Misfire Cylinder 3?
So I'm getting a misfire in cylinder 3 and it has been preventing my truck from starting. Changed the Alternator, battery, fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs, cables and coil packs and ran sea foam through it. It's a 4 cylinder truck I don't know what the hell is the problem at this point very frustrated and just completely annoyed by it does anyone have the slightest idea of what this could be?
For about 10% of the cost of what you've already spent on parts, you could have had a professional diagnostic service performed.
Try cleaning the fuel injectors
A misfire is usually a spark plug or plug wire which is where you start. Take a compression test while the spark plugs are out. Don't know why you'd change the alternator… That just charges the battery and has nothing to do with misfires. Did you have a weak spark since you replaced the coils?
What's the fuel pressure?
You haven't replaced the starter yet.
Crank no start: Check the fuses. Get a test light. Using the test light, check for spark and injector pulse when cranking. If both are not present when cranking, crank sensor is likely bad. Check fuel pressure with a gauge. Check the the injectors if they are firing. Check compression.
A compression test may provide answers.
Don't even get off the couch until a compression test is done. If the compression is good it will be one of 3 things: fuel, spark or a vacuum leak on that hole. Pretty easy to determine if you're patient and have a can of aerosol carb cleaner.
Try pulling the OBD2 trouble codes. The alternator was not the problem and wouldn't make a 1-cylinder misfire if it was bad. You threw away money there and replacing the other items that would also not cause one cylinder to misfire. The trouble code will direct you to where the trouble is and you can test parts and systems in that area instead of replacing more good parts. Check compression and valve timing. If the ignition timing isn't right, you likely need a new timing gear and chain set. Could be the valves in cylinder 3 are wrecked or there's a burned piston leaving very low compression.
How about taking it to a mechanic. Bet he finds the problem for less than what you threw at this on parts
You have changed a lot of parts!
The alternator you check with a voltmeter while the engine is running.
The battery is checked with a capacity tester.
Neither are related to a misfire.
The fuel pressure should be checked at the test port on the fuel rail, before a fuel pump is ever replaced. I've never seen the fuel pump cause a single cylinder misfire.
Spark plugs, plug wires and coils are in the area of most misfires. While the spark plugs are removed, do a cylinder compression test. Have you checked for spark?
A defective injector could be the cause of a single cylinder misfire. Check for injector pulses at the electrical connector first.
I don't believe that one cylinder misfire would keep the engine from starting. If no spark or no injector pulses, check the crankshaft position sensor. Check the camshaft position sensor too.
With a cranking but not starting engine, I always shoot some ether in to see what happens. Momentary starting means there's no fuel.
I've never as of yet found a car that was banging on 3 out of 4 cylinders that would not start. Have you checked the fuel injectors?
