My minivan sound like a diesel truck. What's wrong with it?

I have a 1998 Ford Windstar 3.0L with only 135,000 miles on it.

The last time it was driven, it was on the freeway. As it was leaving the freeway, it broke down. It wouldn't start back up.

We got it towed to my neighbor's driveway to work on it. We replaced a few parts (I don't remember which), then it got started again, but sounds terrible. It sounds like a diesel truck engine.

My friend says that it could be the timing belt or the bearing rods, but my dad says it could be the oil pump. I don't know what it is for sure. What's wrong with it?

Tow to dealer

Your friend and dad are right, it could be those things. It could also be the spark plugs, wires, coil packs, fuel injectors, … The list goes on.

If you don't know what you're doing, you would be better off just getting the problem diagnosed by a professional. Don't go to a dealer like Pedro said, they are considerably more expensive for almost everything.

  • 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac 4X4 Re: Vibration/thumping like sound. Drivers front Someone mentioned the transfer case. Someone responded to that inquiry… They said it probably wasn't the transfer case that would lead to a specific side being affected, but that it COULD be the U-joint in the drive axle. Would that be the U-joint that couples the transfer case to the "short shaft"? If so, if I remove the short shaft, should the vibration/thumping stop? Any input will be greatly appreciated!
  • Approx. How much does it cost to restore an old truck like maybe a 1938-1945 Ford Truck? I've been working on building my detailing business and one day hopefully within the next few years I'd like to get a project truck and restore it to use as the work/company truck. I'd prefer a Ford Truck from between 1938-1945. I'd like to install a more modern engine in it for gas efficiency and A/C. Approx how much would it cost to restore one? Would I be looking at $10-15k or $30-40k?
