A good old 2.4 'Yorker'… Not the best engine Ford ever built.
Your problem certainly sounds like a fuel problem. How old is the fuel? And is there any air in the supply line? Another possibility is the lift pump.
Bleed it through… If it bleeds ok it is unlikely to be the filter… But hey. Why not replace it anyway, last ditch will be the injector pump.

Usual 'helpfull' answer from the Bearface.

Unlikely. Though it may be partially clogged.
Assuming this model has the old York Diesel engine? We may well have fuel supply issue. Replace filter and check for fresh fuel and pressure. Bear in kind engines left for a long time tend to have sticking parts so fuel pump.injectors etc may need bit of attention. Hopefully once run a while it will be ok. From sound of it we have it firing up on idle circuit and not enough fuel or… Main fuel circuit not working. So check basics.

Hi as most problems are resolved by a service and a visit to a dealer.provided the whole car is not more than 10 years old. Then it should be in the scrap yard.
