The small block Ford is the narrowest, with the cammer Ford the widest.
Since the 96 had an optional 4.6 liter V8, that'll be the easiest one to swap in. You can use junkyard parts to do it as a bolt in. You can put an older Ford 5.0 liter in it using a front subframe and parts from a 94 or 95 V8 Mustang.
