If I want to replace the lifters in a 302 V-8 does it matter what type I put in it as a replacement?

My lifters are floating a little I'm going to try an oil change first but if that does not fix the problem would it matter what kind of lifters it has if I replace them. Would i be able to replace them with a different kind of lifter?

Added (1). Ok I have a 1969 Ford Mustang with a 1995 ford mustang 302? How could I tell what kind of lifters are in my engine.

Well in reality, lifters don't float they stick.Valves and valve springs float.Newer model 302, s use roller lifters. The lifter has a roller or what looks like a metal wheel that rolls smoothly over the cam lobes.Older models have flat tappet camshafts with lifters which have to be broken in with the camshaft so that it will get the proper wear pattern on it. If your engine uses this type, you have to run the engine at 2500rpm for 20-30 minutes to properly break the lifters in.Skipping this process will wear the cam lobes down in no time. This procedure is not done to roller camshafts with roller lifters.Flat tappet lifters were used in Ford 302, s until 1984.In 1985 the 302 started using roller lifters. If your engine is the original engine that came in the car from the factory, your year model will tell you which type lifter it should have.84 earlier-flat tappet 85 later-roller lifter

Absolutely. #1. We need to know the year make and model car the engine is in. Older Chevrolet 302's had solid valve lifters. You must not install hydraulic valve lifters on a solid lifter camshaft.

Older Ford 302's in Mustangs also had solid lifters. Newer Ford 302's have hydraulic valve lifters. You can't put solid lifters on a hydraulic lifter camshaft.

Crane, and Comp Cams make high bleed-off hydraulic valve lifters that will not pump up as easily. To make the lifters work correctly you will need to replace your tired valve springs with what ever Comp Cams or Crane recommends.

Harry is bang on, not an @$$hole answer at all, you are. Tells us your problem, not what is in your imagination.

If your lifters are floating(they arent) youve got bent pushrods.
before you use jargon, use plain english. When a valve train floats, its from high revs and weak *** valve springs. As the spring slowly tries to close the valve, the cam hammers the lifter the other direction causing the 2 to meet, and you might also be meeting the piston on the valve side, somethings gotta give, usually resulting in a bowed pushrod or 3.
as for replacement, you either run flat or roller depending on the year or mods youve made. Rhoads does make a variable lifter that worked nice for me before. My end result was running dual valve springs so i could bury the 6000 rpm tach into the mud!

  • Should I replace my 99 Ford Ranger 3.0 auto with a 302 or keep stock? My 99 Ranger is starting to die at the engine and transmission. I'm planning to keep the truck because it's sentimental but should I replace the 3.0 with a 302 or should I either rebuild the 3.0 or replace with another 3.0?
  • What Ford vehicles with a 302 motor comes with a 4 barrel carb (and only comes 302 with a 4bc)? I have a 1989 mustang gt motor and I'm making it carbureted and I'm looking for any vehicle with a 302 that carries a 4b. I'm going to a junkyard where they don't help with finding vehicles, so it would be helpful to know what vehicles only have a 302 with a 4bc, that way I can look it up on the website and know exactly where its at.
  • How much does it cost to stroke a 302 to a 347? 1992 ford mustang 302 5.0 and I want to stroke it to a 347. Is it possible to do this without boring? How hard is it to do for a person who has never done it before but has some mechanic experience? Can I switch it to a carburetor rather than fuel injection?
  • Does cheap transmission fluid matter? I gotta do a transmission flush In my 98 Ford Mustang. I'm trying to be as frugal as I can and found transmission fluid at Autozone for $1.99 but employers there said it's cheap fluid. Does cheap transmission fluid make a difference? Or should I just go with the big guns at $5.99+?
